I don't do anything crazy, I don't think. So why does sfc come back with errors after awhile? Do a DISM restore health and sfc comes back good.

Time goes by, next thing I know, sfc reports problems that it can't repair. Do a DISM restore health, all good.

Time goes by.........you get it. What's the deal? Am I doing something to corrupt system files?

One possibility is your Hard Drive might have some bad spots. To avoid Windows to use those spots, you might want to run: chkdsk C: /f /r from the elevated command prompt. /f will fix any errors, /r will mark all the bad spots in MFT so Windows will avoid using them.

System must be totally screwed. I do that and reboot, go into check mode, hangs at 27% forever. I've keyed out, eventually get back to operating desktop.

I understand chkdsk from DOS days.

Scared the piddle out of me at first. Thought I'd lost everything. Kept getting repairing system screen. Eventually got back my desktop. WTF with 8?

Just did a sfc /scannow. No errors. I'm gobsmacked! One minute things are screwed, next minute, all is fine.

Did a refresh. Sure happy for the .old folder. Thought I'd lost my Chrome browser stuff. Still hours of work. Copy and paste brought me back to real world. Will test to see if store files stop being corrupted with no reason.

Going to image as soon as everything works.

Well, after further searching I have found 8 check disk utility pretty much blows and many people run into the issue where it just goes on forever at 27%. Most of the time it is simply a matter of waiting it out, for me 2 1/2 hours. What a joke! All you see is spinning wheel with no real progress.

I probably would not have needed to do the refresh install :( . Live and learn.

The problem is discussed in another thread on the forum. I missed it when I had the problem originally. Beware if you run the chkdsk /r utility.

Thank you for reporting back. My apology not to give you the WARNING that /r will take a long time to register all the bad spots into the MFT table so that Windows will avoid using them

Not blaming you, the interface sucks if you ask me. A spinning wheel with a percentage meter that hangs at 27%. Talk about crappy status. WTF M$?
