Windows 8.1 with Fast Startup Enabled Hangs Occasionally

I'm not sure what's exactly the problem but sometimes Windows 8.1 hangs at the Windows logo at boot with Fast Startup enabled on a mSATA SSD with my Lenovo Y570 laptop.

My laptop does not support Secure Boot/GPT or UEFI, so I'm really unsure if that's the problem.

Once I disable Fast Startup the boot process never hangs ever but it makes my bootup time slightly slower.

If anyone is experiencing the same issue or knows knows the cockpit of the problem and can shed some light of a solution feel free to reply.

Thanks in advance,

I have know the same problem. Before I had Windows 8 preinstalled, when I bought my laptop, then changing this option did same thing to my - no frequent hangs or freeze. Hopefully HP and Microsft will find a fix for this, otherwise all users will be officially unhappy.

I have the same problem: I have a brand new Lenovo U430 Touch that came with Windows 8.0. I updated to Windows 8.1 (and updated everything) and with "Fast Startup" ON the system won´t boot the first time. (if I turn it off and turn it on a second time it loads). If I turn "Fast Startup" OFF I have no issues.

Fast Startup after Windows 8.1 update is screwed up (as the UEFI "Safe Boot" is also screwed!). So many issues in so little time Microsoft...

Are you sure you got a UEFI GPT installation of 8.1? Check your OS hard drive to make sure you didn't get converted to MBR

I think I've finally found the where the problem lies on my laptop, it's because old system software required at boot (Lenovo Energy Management) running in compatibility mode since Lenovo has still yet to release a update software for Windows 8.1 on my laptop.

For now all I can do if turn off Fast Startup and wait for Lenovo to release a proper Windows 8.1 version of Energy Management for my laptop, I've already started e thread on Lenovo's forum and they've already started making a Windows 8.1 download page for my laptop but still not the software that I need to re-enable Fast Startup as of yet; my fingers are crossed.

Same here! Did a clean W8 installation with GPT/UEFI and everything ran smooth. Updated to W8.1 and now I have the occational lock-up during boot, so I disabled fast boot. I now boot in 30 sec (10+ sec) but at least it's working..

Same here with an old Toshiba laptop. With Fast Startup enabled it always freezes during boot-up at the MS logo. With FS disabled, it's fine. 8.0 didn't have this problem (same drivers used). Tried both 8.1 update and clean install.

I'm still waiting/looking for fix or work around with Fast Startup enabled for my laptop with Windows 8.1.

I've gotten pretty much all other problems/bugs fixed on my laptop with Windows 8.1, I will update this thread if there's progress for a fix on my machine with Fast Startup enabled.

I got a newer version of Lenovo's Energy Management installed on my system (Lenovo ACPI Power Controller in Device Manager), Windows 8.1 with Update 1 now recognizes that my laptop does not support Fast Startup and automatically disables it regardless of whether I turn on or off Fast Startup in the Control Panels > Power Options settings.

This is relief for me, since now changing the Fast Startup settings doesn't do anything anymore; no more hangs with Fast Startup enabled (it's actually disabled by Windows) or disabled because my laptop simply does not support it and so now I've disabled both Fast Startup and Hibernation altogether to save disk space.

Thanks for the update, Nemix. I've also switched from 8.0 to 8.1 and disabled Fast Startup to make it work. Wonder what Microsoft changed there to cause all these old laptops to freeze brutally at startup.

Windows 8 is more forgiving with drivers and software being based off Windows 7 SP1 with a newer kernel updated for the addition of Metro UI.

Early betas of Windows 8 looked pretty much identical to Windows 7 with Start Menu and Aero Glass still intact either by default or enabled through Registry Editor.

Windows 8.1 however is based off Windows 8 with a kernel that is two generations newer than Windows 7 SP1 thus why drivers and software optimized for Windows 7 that previously worked in Windows 8 might not work in Windows 8.1 anymore especially in the case of crucial system drivers ex.: video, system bus, power controller (for some laptops)...

Hi, this is my first post here.
I know this is an old thread, but it's almost exactly about my problem.
My HDD is partitioned with MBR.
My BIOS is in BIOS mode, not UEFI.
I'm using ALL 8.1 drivers, no 7 drivers. Downloaded the 8.1 drivers from the official HP driver download page.
I had no problems when I was using Windows 8.
But ever since I upgraded to 8.1, the computer freezes at the Windows logo while starting up.
If i force a shut down by pressing and holding the power button, and then press the power button again, Windows 8.1 boots up fine.
I have no problem with "Sleep" or "Hibernate", but starting up from cold causes Windows 8.1 to lock up in the Windows logo.

Disabling "Fast Startup" instantly resolves this issue. I have been using this computer with Fast Startup disabled for the last 6 months, not a single lockup. But today, I turned Fast Startup back on, and it locked up again.

Why's this happening? Once again, m using all 8.1 drivers.
Is this happening because of my legacy BIOS?
Is this because of MBR? I just have 2 partitions on the hard drive and the hard drive is 500GB in size, no point using GPT..

It's most probably a driver issue. If your PC/laptop has official 8.1 support from HP then you should contact them.
