Solved Can't remove System Restore Points

I have two restore points in System Restore that will not be removed.
Both are System Image Restore Points that were created when I was experimenting with the Windows 7 Recovery backup tool in Windows 8.
The backups were unsuccessful so I deleted them but I have been left with these two Restore Points....Does anyone know how I can remove these.
I have tried all the suggestions in this tutorial but nothing works http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/336-system-protection-restore-points-delete.html

Thanks

Hi jan18,

Just to make sure it doesn't work, I would try the following (if you have not already done so):

Open System Restore Window:
Select a target drive
Click "configure"
Tick "disable system protection"
Click "apply"
Move the slider to "0"
Click "delete" all restore points
Click "apply"
exit

Repeat for other drives as necessary

If successful, go back and enable System Restore again. Create a new restore point manually.

I apologize in advance if you have already have tried this; however, I have to start with the basics to ensure nothing was missed. Just a few days ago, I spent about 45 minutes working on a RAM configuration issue that didn't work. The OP sounded quite knowledgeable so I skipped over the basics and went into a 45 minute heavy-duty analysis only to find out the OP didn't plug his new memory into the correct slots for a dual channel configuration. Good luck and I hope you understand.

Hi jan18
You can use CCleaner (Tools/System Restore) to remove 2
unsuccessful points and keep the last one.

Hi jan18
You can use CCleaner (Tools/System Restore) to remove 2
unsuccessful points and keep the last one.

Although the above might work to your satisfaction, I would advise you to explore all traditional methods before using same. Here are a few reasons why:

Directly from Pinform support:
Note: CCleaner removes references to the System Restore points, but may not actually remove all files related to each point.

Another Pinform link of interest:
CCleaner Keeps Deleting My System Restore Point - CCleaner Discussion - Piriform Community Forums

Now, you can expect many replies like "I've used CCleaner for years without issue" and to those anticipated replies I say "Great, but there have been some of us that have not been that lucky."

Good luck.

Hi my2cents, Thank you for your suggestion. I had already done that but the two System Image Restore Points remain. As I said in my opening post I have gone through all the options in Brinks tutorial and nothing removes these two entries.
Perhaps if I could find where windows 8 stores these Restore Points it may be possible to remove them from there.

Regards

Jan

Hi jan,

I meant no harm but I just had to make sure. Also, you have one other option to consider (Ccleaner) and other forum members may chime in as well. In the meantime, I'll explore your suggestion and see what else I can come up with.

Hi effigy, Thanks for your suggestion. I have used the latest version of CCleaner but it does not see the two System Image Restore entries...only the manual restore point I created.

Hey jan18, I just noticed they are not traditional restore points. They are, in fact, system image restore points. This should be any easy fix if you know where those system image backups reside. So, do you know their location?

Well, maybe not so easy, but now I have a way to find the answer. Apparently, a system image restore point is created every time you create a system image; however, it appears that those entries are never deleted because I create a system image frequently and here's what mine looks like:

Note: I had to turn on my stsem restore to do this test. So, you thought you had problems; eh? I'll be back.

OK, I think I found the solution. Now I am just waiting for the deletions to finish (I hope). I'll be back.

Update: this is taking longer than expected....

Big Update: I see that my friend David Bailey has already "revealed" the solution that I am, in fact, now trying. All kudos to Dave for posting it first. Now, I will just continue to try and confirm that it works! Thanks buy guy!

This is taking forever on my machine. Maybe because I have so many references to be cleaned out. Anyone else game for trying David's suggestion? If not, mine will finish eventually (I hope)...

In that case, both SystemRestore and WindowImageBackup are stored in C:\System Volume Information folder
uncheck Hide protected operating system files
go through Advandce in Security tab to access it and sub-folder

I'm still in the deletion process so I will report my results when completed.

Well, after that lengthly wait, I can confirm that it did not work for me either. So, try and work with effygy and see if he can get you through this. Good luck.

Hi again my2cents, Thank you for going to all this trouble to try and help me. If your solution is the same as David Baileys, I have already tried that and it did not work.
