Backup and restore

I bought a commercial backup programme when I bought my Windows 8 PC.

Now, when I need it, I am having difficulties in restoring.

Is the "Windows 7 File Recovery" which is included in Win 8 a good replacement for commercial programmes such as EaseUS and Norton?

I would like to trust Microsoft with my file and image backups.

Hi there
What program are you using -- all the recent versions of the standard commercial programs work OK.

Create a Bootable recovery system, simply boot that and restore the image you made.

BTW I have some issues with Free Macrium and USB3 devices.

Yes, it works OK for me but I just use it for System Imaging. I also agree with topguncp that Macrium Reflect Free is a nice free alternative.

I have used both Windows system imaging and Macrium Reflect to create and restore system images. But prefer Macrium Reflect as I have never encountered a problem with restoring an image, whereas there have been times when an image created by the Windows program did.

I use EaseUs version 9.2.1. I don't remember the exact wording of the error message but it warned me that the disc layout had changed and asked if I still wanted to proceed.
Considering that it was stressful enough to have reached the position that I felt that a complete system recovery was necessary, to be faced with a message like that increased my stress levels considerably. Prior to this I had confidence in the product and it was gut wrenching to find that there was now some doubt that the recovery process would work properly. Just at the time when I really needed it. I know that I had changed nothing and the manufacturer's reputation fell to zero as far as I was concerned.
On a happier note I had some good advice and no longer need a disc recovery, however I will get rid of the offending backup system.

Hi there
@ Macrium users -- Is the issue with native USB3 devices fixed or haven't you encountered any problem with this yet.

When I tested the Free version (for RESTORE) recently it didn't recognize my USB3 device -- now I KNOW I could have plugged it into a USB2 port - but with a USB3 port and an external SSD restore takes around 7 - 10 mins instead of over an HOUR !! using the USB2 port.

I'm still sticking with ATH -- after some issues with ATH 2011 the latest release works just fine - but I often test other backup products too just in case the one you usually use stops working after a Ms or user upgrade whether hard or software.

BTW if you have Windows Enterprise -- using Windows to Go makes an EXCELLENT tool for backup and recovery !!!

Cheers

I have the paid version of Macrium.
So far it works like a charm.
No issues of any kind. :)

Some confusion here?... 9.2.1. refers to an older version of the Easeus Partition Master, it's not their backup program. Whatever, glad you got your problem sorted out.

As a note, have been using Easeus todo BU for years, have been perfect everytime I needed\used it, personally or for clients\friends. And have tested out Macrium, works great as well, and using that one for 'second line of defense' backups, but never had to resort to it yet.
