Disk use at 100%

Hi, I had a problem with my laptop in that the disk use went to 100% and then the screen started blinking and I couldn't click on anything. After a reinstall of the OS it worked the same as new for about an hour but now the disk use climbs to 100% even when a new tab is opened and it stays at the max for a short time. The laptop becomes unresponsive during this time also.

A solution to this problem would be greatly appreciated as I really need the laptop for college and I have no money for a new one

Many thanks
cuz

Can you tell by looking in task manager which program uses the disk?

If it's one or another not-essential one you can try to stop it from running (end task) or disabling it from start-up if it's put there.

Thanks for the reply, it's said a picture's worth a thousand words so here's one right after I've opened a new tab in Chrome.

Looks strange to me,no process seems to justify a 99% activity.Would you please download process explorer Process Explorer, install, run, right click next to ''process'' or ''pid'' anywhere in the upper title bar, select columns,in Process I/O tab, choose delta reads and writes and identify which process is using the disk.I will gladly help you with the application,a great tool.

In the first two screenshots we can see that AVG is scanning, that can explain it... the "system" process on the other hand can be something else but can translate in the AVG scanner itself or even Win Defender (this one should be set to off if you use AVG).

The Resource Monitor (resmon.exe) might be a good thing to check. In the Disk Activity section, it shows real time disk activity and can be filtered by such a thing as System, or whatever is showing the most activity. If you watch it for a while, you might pick up something.

Make sure and close sections you don't need so you can see more at once.

I tried running process explorer in safe mode but I couldn't. When I run it in ordinary mode I open it from the folder that it was put in when I originally downloaded it i.e. it's not installed

How full is your HDD? When you get close to full the system will badly fragment files and thrash the disk trying to find all the pieces.
