Fast boot no effect

I have Asus Maximus V formula z77 with latest EUFI firmware, and EVGA GTX 680 classified with EUFI firmware. Bios is set to fast boot etc, and it is enabled in windows, but I'm seeing no difference from before. I was using boot racer and seeing 11-14 second windows load times with another 10-15 til desktop. Averaging around 28 second boot speeds, whether from a fast boot shut down or a restart. My OS drive is a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB.

Any insight here? My windows 7 booted faster on an OCZ Vertex 4 128GB.

~10 second boot time to desktop here with a 128 GB Crucial M4 SSD and Windows Fast Startup disabled. My laptop is set to auto logon. The times you posted are about what I get on my desktop PC with a normal spinner hard drive. I don't know what's wrong but it would appear that something isn't right?

I have a Z77 and will check it tomorrow. The Bios has a Rapid Boot option, which is not related to Windows 8. The Windows 8 Fast Boot uses a prefetch file to boot faster.

Exactly what type of boot are you referring to? A cold boot where the system is completely shut down or a reboot? Different type of boots, and there are a couple, make reference to the type of boot and power status prior to that boot.

But 10-15 seconds to the desktop seems a little long.

I'm referring to any boot. they are all about the same time. cold, restart and fast boot shutdown/ power on.

I have been trying to speed up my system for testing. Personally I do not really care about the time it takes, but my normal boot is around 12-14 seconds to the Logon and 3 seconds to the Desktop. If your system is loading a bunch of things it might take more time to reach the Desktop.

I stumbled across something in the Task Manager I had not noticed. On the Startup page, there is a Bios time counter which shows how long the boot took to get past the initial boot. It also shows thing that may have an impact on your boot times.

Other than that, I tried finding things in the Bios such as a Fast Boot option or something you could adjust the time the option stayed available during boot. That seemed to help some, but nothing I have done has come even close to the video in the below link. I am running an SSD, but my motherboard was not originally certified as Windows 8 Ready, so it may be missing something the really fast boot Windows 8 needs.

Ok, it was an obvious question to ask. I'd have been surprised if you had said no or "what is AHCI". Have a look at what Saltgrass has posted above.

ha yeah, I did have it plugged originally into the asmedia controller ports :/ I switched it to Intel's controller and picked up 120MB/sec under property ahci but that was unrelated.

I've noticed boot/startup tracing programs don't work correctly with Windows 8/8.1, it's best to use a timer like a phone or a watch to time Windows startup.

With that being said even without a timer I've noticed Windows 8/8.1 boots faster than Windows 7 even with fast boot disabled and if timed it's about 2-3 seconds faster than Windows 7 on my SSD, with fast boot enabled Windows 8/8.1 boots about another 2-3 seconds faster however shutdown time is about 2-3 seconds slower with fast boot enabled.

If you do not use Hibernation or Hybrid Sleep I'd suggest decreasing the Hibernation file size to 50% instead of the default 75% of your total system memory, it's just a waste of valuable SSD space by leaving the Hibernation file size at 75% if you're not using Hibernation or Hybrid Sleep features IMHO.

:p

I disable hibernation from the command line (powercfg -h off) and that completely removed the hiberfil.sys file. ;)

Good thinking but if Fast Boot is enabled the next best thing is to shrink the Hibernation file size to 50% if one does not use Hibernation or Hybrid Sleep but still wants Windows Fast Boot feature enabled.
