Windows 8 File History: Pointless on Solid State Drives?

Hi guys.

I have a problem: It seems to me that File History will only back-up files from your system *libraries.* In other words: It can't back-up from one external hard drive to another.

This is very problematic. For instance: What if your main hard drive happens to be small, as it tends to be with many Ultrabooks or Tablets that are installed with SSD drives?

Or what if you have a larger hard drive, but decide to install the OS on an SSD drive, which tends to be much smaller in capacity?

I am a photographer, and I have at least 300 GB of data to back up. It seems File History won't be an option for me if I opt for an SSD drive and install my OS onto it.

I hope there is a way around this limitation. Does anyone have suggestions?

Hello Shane,

If you like, you could add/include the folders that you want to be include in File History to a library of your choice. This way when File History save a version of the files in your libraries, all included folders in the libraries will also be included in File History. The folder will still be located on the other drive, but referenced through the library so that File History is able to save versions of it.
You could also select any drive to have File History saved to.

If you like, you could also use the Windows Backup feature to back up files from any location.
Hope this helps, :)
Shawn
