but when i close the lid and open it later it turns on, in fact it was neither on nor sleep,
    power cable is connected always.

If you have it set to do nothing in battery and plugged modes, then it should do nothing except blank the screen.

I just set my power plan to do nothing when the lid is closed, and it did nothing but to turn the screen off..

However the laptop did go to sleep after the predetermined time set in the sleep plan..

Is it turning off right away or after a few minutes?

Check the rest of your plan to see if your computer is set to sleep an any given point.

    Hi there
sometimes closing the lid activates a little micro switch in the computer which being hardware activated will overrule whatever your software settings are -- it's like physically pressing the OFF switch and holding it off until the computer powers off.

Depends on your make of laptop.

However it seems to me to make perfect sense in switching OFF the internal monitor when the lid is closed --who can see it. We don't yet have X-Ray vision.

For displays using an external Monitor / mouse / keyboard it makes sense to have the laptop on a docking station with the lid closed and the internal display powered off anyway.

    Cheers

I am having similar problems where my power settings keep changing even after being saved.

This drove me nuts with a Dell Inspiron M531R-5535. I figured out that the new power button is so sensitive that moving the lid, strangely I think either way, made the laptop go into sleep mode. I have not figured out if I can make the power button less sensitive so I just set it to Do Nothing since wonderful Windows 8 does not seem to have the option to set it to Ask Me what to Do, like I think XP does (not sure about Vista or Windows 7).

In addition to all the previous suggestions, you might want to check to see if your BIOS has any power management configuration options. Many times, vendors provide their own power plan, drivers and software. And sometimes, they option their own power management plan to function differently than is shown in Windows. A specific case in point was a Sony Vaio that wouldn't sleep when the lid was closed. Now, its been a long time but I think that was the issue and everything looked good in the Windows view. Finally, the OP contacted Sony and they just flat out said "we don't support that feature; period." Good luck,
