I don't know if I can mention names so I will just say I have used a registry backup program which uses Windows Volume shadow copy and wanted to know if I should turn off Windows system restore and use the registry backup or stay with Windows system restore?

If I can mention names please let me direct you so if you have not heard I can get a valid opinion. System restore has failed me on occasion.

Thank you

Hello Peter,

Yes, it's fine to mention the name of the software that you would like help with. It's only ever an issue if it's illegal or blatant spamming of the software. :)

If the program works for you, then there's no need for you to continue to keep System Protection turned on if you need the hard drive space. If you have plenty of hard drive space, then System Protection could be used as another layer of backup to be extra safe.

Well, thank you for clearing that up -I do not want to be banned from this great forum.
I find participants here to be courteous as well as adept.

Tweking.com, by Shane, has an excellent registry backup program -volume shadow copy service. It never failed me unlike system restore + if I am not mistaken, points can be deleted without damaging the point thread. I have to check on that.

It may be prudent to use it along with a decreased amount of restore points.

I am curious, do any of you in the forum use a registry backup program or just system restore?

Thank you

I use system restore as a secondary backup plan and a system image as a main backup, but I usually manually export any keys I'm going to tinker with first from the registry as a backup.

I do the same with the first part about system restore and an image but cannot perform registry maneuvering like you do with the keys.
However, I feel secure knowing system restore and an imaging program suffice -thanks again.

Hi there
IMO if you need to backup the registry -I'd use a full backup program like Acronis (commercial) or a free one like Free Macrium. If you've separated your OS and installed programs (e.g Office) on a separate partition / drive to your data (photos, documents, music etc) then a typical backup image will only take around 15 mins -- then restore the image if you need to revert back again.

It's a good idea anyway always to have OS backups --you should really take these at LEAST once a week -- and certainly before installing any software.

The other advantage in separating OS from Data is that if you DO need to re-install / recover the OS you don't lose your data.

Note also if you do use a program like Acronis or Macrium don't forget to include the small system partition as well in the image backup if it exists. This will be the ACTIVE BOOT partition -- usually small around 50 - 100 MB only. Don't confuse this with a RECOVERY partition that some computers have when you buy these already loaded with Windows.

Cheers
jimbo

Hi Jimbo
I do use Macrium to do an image each month and keep my data on two separate flash drives. I also have Win native image of my system when I first installed just in case.

Could you tell me, which is more comprehensive. That is, which is the outer ring of a Venn diagram encompassing the other, a registry backup or system restore. I see the registry as the whole pc and therefore capable of doing more than the system restore which only backs up Windows files. I am just trying to learn the difference between the two.
I used a great registry backup and am unsure if I should use it or system restore, which just failed me.
The registry seems not be affected if one point was removed or corrupted and system restore seems to have a connection among the points.
Just trying to learn and thank you.
Peter

System Restore will restore a portion of the registry and system files that were modified since the restore point was created. System Restore is more selective about what it restores than either a registry backup or full system backup. This can be good and bad. System Restore is certainly not a cure all but often offers a quick solution to a problem. It works best when used as soon as possible after a problem develops. The further back you go the more likely there will be problems.

Much about System Restore has not been publicly documented, and for good reason. When a specific behavior is documented application developers will take advantage of it and Microsoft is then committed to support it indefinitely. Malware writers would love to know more about the inner workings of System Restore.

System restore

I see that the registry is only a part of all this -I did not know that.
A registry backup does just that while a system restore does more, so to speak.
Your explanation put it in perspective and I thank you.
