I'm really clueless as to how to describe my problem here. My laptop running Windows 8 Pro sometimes goes into sleep and sometimes doesn't (when I close the lid).

I don't even know what troubleshooting to do. Can I get some help?

In the power plan do you have the lid button programmed to put the system to sleep?

What usb devices do you have connected to your laptop when its trying to sleep?

Is there a noisy party upstairs? No just kidding....

Does the screen stay on with the lid closed?

Yes, the lid is programmed to put it to sleep. Sometimes, it goes to sleep and sometimes it doesn't.

USB devices - generally nothing except an iPod which is connected to charge sometimes. But, that hasn't made a difference...

Screen switches off after lid is closed. When I open the lid, it is still off but I know it doesn't go to sleep because I can hear the fans whirring

Ok check this in yourt bios, its the only thing left that Ive been reading...

Difference between S1 (POS) and S3 (STR) standby mode in BIOS?

S3 may be your solution..

Ok, I'm on a mac which only has a BIOS emulator and I can't change any settings. However, on digging, I found that it only supports the S3 mode.

And, these days, it is going to sleep nicely. It was one week in between (when I made the original post) which irritated. I don't know if it was some software which was preventing. Event logs showed nothing to me.

Fan problem: Go to you your Power Saving settings then open your Advanced settings and scroll down to Processor Power Management then click and choose System Cooling Policy and choose PASSIVE for both battery and plugin.
Your fan will now be thermostatically controlled rather than always on.

Also, while you're in there check your LID function to be sure it is at the setting you want then SAVE.

Finally, even when you SAVE it is a good idea for the next few re-boots to go back and make sure the settings are where you left them, often they will change for no apparent reason.
