Solved Action Center often scans for disk errors

The process is C:\Windows\system32\MSchedExe.exe, set to run Automatic Maintenance at 3AM everyday by default when you install Windows. When run, will carry out task like security updating and scanning, Windows software updates, Disk Defragmentation, Disk Volume Errors, System Diagnostics, etc... so perhaps it finds some bad blocks on your hard disk and try to fix it. I suggest that you run chkdsk C: /r /f once. /r will mark all bad blocks and record in the MFT to prevent Windows from using them.

Fsutil dirty query C: only tells you whether the dirty bit on Volume C is set or not. If it is set ( fsutil dirty set C: ), chkdsk will run when you restart Windows.

I do not understand this bit, I was told that if there are no errors on the disk it will report as not dirty so running chkdsk is not required.

EDIT: You are right if there's no error, However, Automatic Maintenance might have raised this bit when checking for disk error due to bad blocks on the HD. If they are not used then everything is fine. That's why I suggest you to run at least once: chkdsk /r /f c:

Try this yourself: fsutil dirty set C: then restartt your Windows, chkdsk will be running

thanks for the explanation.

This is where I am now, I ran chkdsk /r /f in dos from the W8 install disk repair options,
but it is asking me if I want to unmount the disk so it can complete the scan.

What happens if I unmount the disk, will I still be able to use it when the scan is
complete and the errors fixed?

This is normal. It means that during the scan you won't be able to use or access it. After the scan, it will be back to normal.

I ran chkdsk /r /f and errors were found, the text was "windows replaced bad clusters in file (number) of name
\windows etc"

Is this a software error or does this mean my Hard Drive is damaged or faulty?

No HD's are perfect and they all tend to have some bad spots. What /r does is scanning your whole disk and marks all the bad spots and stores them in the MFT (Master File Table) so that Windows will not use it. As long as this is done then you are OK.

Since it found some errors and happened in Windows folder, you might have some corrupted system files so next step is to open the elevated command prompt and run couple of commands:

1. dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
2. sfc /scannow ---> you might have to run this multiple times until you get: Windows did not find any integrity violation.

fc /scannow, three times until no errors were found and all seems okay now with no
action centre disk errors reported.
