Well its been about SIX WEEKS since my system was operational (!) and almost five of them were spent trying to recover my own data off the hard drive to my backup drive cos i had accidentally reinstalled win 7 to the wrong hdd! Oops!

Siw2 sent me a useful iso to burn to try to recover the files (thanks siw2 for ur help and time) but it turned out the software (minitool recovery) wasnt any gud at recovering my files as it kept crashing during the recovery process (after it had finally finished scanning the drive for hours upon hours).

I tried several other apps that all failed in various ways (to be honest i think the winpe environment didnt want to play ball with my system as it reported only 4gb ram when i has 16gb as well as other reasons...

I can confirm that an app finally worked amazingly (launched from a new install of win 7) called (ZAR) zero assumption recovery. I sing its praises!

Anyway ive got to the point where im trying to install win 8 but just cannot get it installed!

Ive tried installing win 7 and upgrading from the desktop to win 8, booting up from an install dvd and usb drive and nothing works no matter how i format or dont format the intended hdd. Every way just doesnt work - it either says it cant install to the drive before even trying or it gets to between 30-40% of the initial process and says i stall failed! Wtf!

    Any answers?

    My system:
asus sabretooth 990fx rev 1 mobo
    16gb corsair vengeance ram
    2x 3tb seagate hdd
    pioneer bdr drive
amd six core 3.3ghz pile driver cpu
msi 7870 2gb oc gfx card

Run chkdsk /r on the drive (which checks for both errors and bad sectors).

Disconnecting one of the hard drives. Then the hard drive you are going to install to, delete all the partitions on it and recreate new ones and format and then do a clean install. After the install is complete, reconnect the second hard drive.

    Windows 8 & Windows 7 Dual Boot

Just FYI, i read a similar post about restoring an image not working in win 8.. Turns out when the other person removed the USB boot flashdrive after selecting restore, THEN it worked flawlessly. But as long as the flashdrive was still connected, the image always aborted and failed at some point...

As for your attempt to install Win 8, please send us a snapshot of your disk management to see how your harddrives are configured..

You should label your partitions so that they are not confused during installation..

Names and letters of drives and partitions are for US as humans to understand, windows does not see the installations as such, it just sees Disk 0 Partition 1 or Disk 1 Partition 3 etc....
