I have been trying to a system image (Windows 8) and keeps telling me to insert a blank disk and mark it, Computer Name, Date and Disk #. It keeps telling me to install one and mark it #1 every time the current disk (DVD) is full, also the status bar does not show any advancement in the process. The other 2 machines I have and did a system image on asks you to insert a disk with the numbers going in sequence, 1, 2, 3 etc.

Hello Jackman,

Do you have a hard drive to save the system image to instead?

I find DVDs terribly unreliable for system images. :(

I had the same problem with my laptop - it kept asking for disks and telling me to label them as disk 1.

I'm afraid I didn't find a way round it except for using a 3rd party product.

Which is better, system image or a normal backup or are they the same animal? I also feel that DVD's or CD's are usually somewhat unreliable. It seems a good idea to get extra hard drives and install them in the pc which probably would make a person more likely to do backups or images, which ever is the best.

Jackman,

It's really not a matter of which is better, but which is better for what you need instead. :)

System Image = A complete image backup of Windows hard drive and any selected hard drive. When restored, it wipes the hard drive and returns the hard drive to how it was when the image was created.

Windows Backup = A backup of files in selected folders with the option of including to create a system image as well. You have the option of doing this on an automatic schedule.

See if I have this right. An Image would set you up, as you say, just like the drive was when Imaged, but you can't pick and choose any data files. But, the Backup would give you the best of 2 worlds, selecting files to restore and also Image the entire drive. In other words, if I lost some data files I could go to the Backup and restore just those files or restore the whole drive if needed and get all of your files from that period of time that the Image/Backup was made.
