Performance of Excel 2013 in Parallels-Wind 8 vs Wind XP

I have updated from Excel 2003 / XP to Excel 2013 / Windows 8 Enterp 64 bit.
The new Excel appears to take longer just to move from 1 cell to the next, even on a blank workbook

I have a Mac Pro, using Parallels 8, and the XP / Excel 2003 works faster, both virtual machines are on the same computer:
The Mac is a Dual Quad Core, at 667 MH speed
I have assigned 2 CPU's to the Wind. 8 virtual machine, ( and just 1 in XP)
I'm testing these one at a time.

Why ? Is W8 slower
Is parallels W8 slower due to their interface?
Are there settings that could fix this?

Looking forward to the new software benefits, but hard to get past the speed issue.
Any body smarter than me out there on this? I'm sure there are.
Thanks in advance for any help or comments.

Well, Office 2013 uses GPU hardware acceleration to perform those unnecessary animations that looks cool to some users. From your experience, it looks like Parallels is not supporting the GPU hardware acceleration that Office 2013 uses. Try disabling GPU hardware acceleration from Excel options. You can also disable animations to further improve performance.

Hi there
EXCEL 2003 is meaner and leaner any way you care to look at it --and it's 32 bit. Excel 2013 is a more complex program and is 64 bit. Now I don't know how Parallels performs its virtualisation but as the previous poster says EXCEL 2013 makes more use of the GPU which might be fine on a HOST with real hardware but when the Video is being Virtualized then you could get all sorts of performance degradations.

In any case EXCEL 2007 / 2010 IMO are a far better bet than 2013 and these can be installed as 32 bit versions as well which probably will work far better in a virtual environment than the 64 bit equivalents. Unless you run the next Manned Mission to Mars calculations for NASA on your machine the 32 bit version of office is fine for running on Virtual Machines.

IMO also there isn't a HUGE amount of difference in staying with EXCEL 2003 -- unless you are a super super power user running every conceivable macro or excel basic scripts you shouldn't see a lot of difference.

You also need to look at possibly performance implications for running a 64 bit Guest (Windows 8) on Parallels -- VMware does it OK but it's ages since I messed around with Parallels.

I am so lucky for these forums: Thanks to theveterans and Jimbo45 !
I did the above suggestions, ran the "turn off animations" .exe, and the GPU was already turned off in my main book, I think it's running a bit faster. Thanks so much for the input.
Question on 64 bit vs 32 bit, I have Windows 8 Enterp 64 bit operating system, Will that run a 32 Office 2010 ?
Also, I have gone steroids on lots of Macros, but I'm not using huge amounts of data, just lots of lower level math, copy & pasting (in vb ie: RangeA.formulaR1C1 = RangeB.FormulaR1C1 type stuff).trying for best of both worlds, wanting to take adv. of the new Excel stuff, and everything else that is improved over XP. As far as videos go, no problems there- you tube plays fine, and I don't run any games, just work. Gary O.

Hi there
Office 2010 32 bit runs just fine on a 64 Bit windows as will office 2007 or even office 2003 --I'm using it myself on W8 x-64 enterprise and I consider myself to be something of a Guru at EXCEL --or at least my colleagues seem to think so.

Speed is ok, New, Bigger issue: Insert Range Object fails!

Ugh boy, Can't insert rows in vb anymore !@#$
New surprise problem, upon advice from the MSDN web site and C.Pearson, I'm using Option Explicit, top of ea Module. That's No Big deal, lots of dimming work.
but....
My whole project is stopped now, as there's an intermittent problem Run-time error 2147417848...
" The object invoked has disconnected from its clients." when your using
Code:
  Selection.copy,Selection.Insert Shift:=xlDown
and also, error 1004, insert range object method has failed

I'm going nuts, and frankly, Microsoft, this is Bull ...:(.... They say something about Unqualified, but the code names the sheets, range, all dimmed, etc, and has worked for years. Module level code, simple stuff.

I hate to abandon the new stuff, as I have a lot of time into it already.

Thank 2 million for any good solutions.

Hi there
Great EXCEL forums out there - for all sorts of stuff Like Mr EXCEL.com

Excel Questions.

For Financial stuff pretty neat EXCEL examples here : -- Older versions of EXCEL - but Basic Maths and Stats haven't changed all that much - unless your hunting for the Higson Particle.

Index of /Excel

I use EXCEL also for market trading - getting stuff in real time from Market sites.

One thing I like doing is Options Trading - I get data from CBOE (Chicago Board of Options Exchange in REAL TIME and insert into EXCEL). For example -- old data but you should get the idea.

If you've goty stuff that works don't upgrade to a newer version of EXCEL -- especially from 32 bit to 64 bit -- there might be a whole ton of macros that will need to be re-written.

I's stick to either 2007 or 2010 -- I tried my CBOE stuff on 2013 -- You've guessed it it failed at first go. !!

Even EXCEL 2003 could be OK but accessing the web and doing queries is a bit different so choose 2007 or 2010 --bothe versions are still currently supported by Ms and will be for at least the next 5 years or so.

Here's a sample of how to read data say form YAHOO finance in EXCEL. YAHOO can provide all sorts of stuff .

You can modify this for other data sources -- shouldn't be too hard.

Sub GetData()

Looking like I should get off 2010 then

Jimbo- your stuff looks like a money maker. I'm struggling with trying to make estimating for a General contractor (40 trades), as efficient as a Sub contractor (1 trade)- crazy I guess?

I may indeed go to off 2010, if it's more stable or "less encumbered" than 2013. Thanks for your advice.

However, I'm thinking that the new "Object is disconnected from clients..." may be related to when I ran the .exe to remove the typing animations: Office 2013 Typing Animation - Turn On or Off - Windows 7 Help Forums from verterans-which affects the entire OS. Not sure

I'm looking into undoing or replacing that, as the timing seems too remarkable - I suppose a lot of the corrections, (option explicit & all variables declared) are good anyways, and the book.

Will off 2010 open the book from 2013, or should I go back to the xp version, and update modules w/ recent work ?

Hi there
I can't say too much about 2013 since I've abandoned it -- you could try saving your work in one of the previous EXCEL formats from 2013. EXCEL 2015 can SAVE stuff in previous EXCEL formats.

Note Excel 2007 and 2010 can be opened "in compatability mode" although anything I wrote for EXCEL 2007 works fine.

Another idea is to start an XP Virtual machine and run office XP -- save your work to a folder that your HOST can see -- sharing folders between a VM and the Host machine is just simple "Normal Networking".

In any case I'd just "Toss" excel 2013.

Cheers

Jimbo- I'm preparing to back up my current modules, & re-install the Wind 8 VM, due to all the crap that has occurred, and get office 2010 32bit . ( btw, I have kept the xp vm, and I'm only upgrading to postpone the day when xp /off 2003 stuff is too obsolete).
I do like a lot of the improvements in excel fro 2003, but of course , not the slow downs.
