As the title says,
i have read several times now that system restore creates a daily automatic restore point,
i had a script to do this in 7 and i added it to win 8 ,now im thinking i dont need it.

i would guess it does it at start up, but does anyone have more info on this,

having looked at the restore points going back to the 6th when i first got this laptop i dont see any instant restore points that look to have been created automatically(daily), and i dont see points for each software installed either (i read it does this also)
as its a new laptop i have installed quite a few things and there ought to be quite a few restore points if this is the case.
anyone got an idiots guide that explains it,

folks on other sites are giving tutorials about system restore points and mention the daily automatic restore point but no more info, i would think its quite important info to have

System restore does not create on a daily basis. Restore point is usually created when:
  1. Certain Windows Updates that effect Windows functionality and restore point will be created as needed in which case you'll see multiple restore points in one day and none on other.
  2. Install 3rd party software, drivers depending on how they set up their installer package in which case they'll automatically create a restore point so that if there's a problem after installation, you can then roll back to the previous state.
  3. Manually create restore point
  4. Software that modifying your system registry in which case they'll prompt you whether you want to create a restore point before proceeding.

Hello Jerry,

When System Protection is turned on for a drive, it creates a scheduled restore point only if no other restore points have been created in the last 7 days, and before significant system events such as a program or driver installation.

Personally, there's really no need to create a separate task to create restore points unless you just wanted to.

I like using the shortcut below to make it easy to create a restore point whenever I like.

yeah i think you are right i misread this list,

System Restore points are created when the following event occur in Windows:

  • Automatically every day.
  • When a new application is installed.
  • When a new driver is installed.
  • When you uninstall certain programs.
  • When new Windows updates are installed.
  • When you manually create one.
  • When programs are programmed to create a new restore point. This may be done when a program cleans your computer of infections or makes changes to your Windows Registry.
  • Right before you restore to a previous restore point, System Restore will create a new restore point.

ok thats good to know then ,so my daily instant restore point from the script can stay ,it works as those points show.

i think ted will have to add that it is win 8 compatable to his tutorial on sevenforums.

as it is early days for me i want to know i have a very recent restore point going back a couple of days atm can mean a load of installs being wiped, using teds tut i can choose yes or no at start up to have a restore point created.
once i am more relaxed with everything running smoothly as i want it then i can relax about the restore points.
