Win 8/explorer 10 slowdown

Hello
I read a MS article that said to block both boxes, i.e., 'block all incoming connections' and 'notify me etc'. in both private and public network settings.
Win 8/explorer 10 needs a right click>refresh to speed it along many times when web browsing.
I have a router but never noticed this slowdown from XP through Win 7 until Win 8.
I wish I had a couple of things I could try to speed it up.
Is the firewall setting the reason or is there another feature I can look at to speed it up?
Thank you
Peter

I wonder if resetting explorer would help???

FF has small script or letters. I know I can click on shift + or click view zoom but how do you "keep" the size as large as you would like?

it would not hurt to try a reset of ie ,it didn't help me ., in FF i think if you go to view and Zoom and zoom in it will go bigger and stay that way until you change it back

>>I don't think I will reset it then. It seems that when i enlarge FF it is ok till i restsrtit and the size reverts to smaller again.
Btw, do you have your firewall set so it looks like the attachment. that is how the MS article said to do it but i wonder if checking the incoming is slowing it down?

Is the firewall setting the reason
It won't be due to the firewall blocking incoming connections. Unless you need something to establish a connection to your computer (such as remote access, file sharing, etc.) then leave block all incoming connections on.

When you're web browsing, they are outgoing connections. Even though traffic is travelling both ways, it's your computer/browser that initiates the connections and is therefore outbound.

I will check to block incoming; odd that everyone I talk with and all the tutorials have the incoming unblocked.

I read it should be blocked if in a café for example.

Install NoSquint add-on allows you to adjust the text size and stay at that size whenever you open Firefox. That's what I am using. After installing the add-on, click on Option and set it to the zoom percentage that you want.

IE 10 slowdown
I don't use IE10 but I think you might have some add-ons/Toolbar installed without your knowledge. Download Autoruns for Windows and run it as Admin, click on Internet Explorer Tab. Uncheck everything, Reboot and try again. If surfing speed is improved then one of those add-on cause it to slow down.

If you restart on the same website then yes, it'll remember text size you set, but if you open another website, it might change the text size again. With the add-on mentioned above, it will stay at same text size all the time.

Hope this help !!!

Try turning off the IE10 SmartScreen filter. This will keep IE10 from querying the Microsoft database of known good and bad websites "before" you actually go to the website. Now, bear in mind that Microsoft has developed this feature in an attempt to lessen the possibility of your PC getting infected by you inadvertently visiting a malicious website; however, if you have your anti-virus and/or malware protection up-to-date, you should be OK with it off.

Ok. Let's try something else. In IE10 go to Tools > Manage AddOns and disable (or remove) everything. See if that helps. My IE10 is reasonably fast (most of the time) but I still prefer Firefox. Here' a few screenshots of my IE 10 addons:

My MSIE 10 changes. Sometimes it is slow and others it is fast. I cannot be specific to what circumstances prevail at the times to find a common denominator.
Your addons are few.
I do not purposely allow them but they have accumulated.
Is there a way to start over or remove them? I know they can be disabled.
Right now the machine is zipping along as though there was no issue.
Please see the attachment.
Silverlight is in Ccleaner when I click the registry cleaner to analyze. There must be 30 invalid entries for it. Because I never use a registry cleaner, I never cleaned it. I wonder if it would be a good idea to use Revo to remove Silverlight.

2 ways to uninstall Add-on in IE10.
  1. Uninstall thru Programs and Features
  2. If the add-on in not listed in step 1. Use Autoruns mentioned in earlier post, right click on it and select delete

I went to programs and features and saw a list of programs but no Add-ons listed. I also saw Windows features there but no Add-ons listed.

I have read the previous posts but cannot find auto runs. Is that the feature that allows you to stop a program from loading at startup?

Yes and it does a lot more.

I did give you the link to download from Microsoft site. It is part of SysinternalsSuite from Microsoft, Here's the link again and read the description on that site, you'll know what it does:
Autoruns for Windows

Run it as Admin and click on Internet Explorer Tab, there'll be a list of Add-ons, Uncheck to disable, right click and select delete will delete.

Cheers
