Hello all,

I discovered that many of my portable programs were leaving multiple reporting instances in the notification tray. Two repeat offenders were GPU-Z and HDTune. It seems like every time I run these programs, they leave an obsolete notification in the tray. So, I started looking for a way to address this issue and the attached document provides the answer that works for me.

The document was originally intended to work on Windows 7 but I have used it successfully on Windows 8 Pro. Now, although this is not a permanent fix (eg, the icons will be back if I run those programs again), I can at least manage them on a periodic basis. IMPORTANT: If you decide to try this procedure, please use it in its entirety because if you just do the regedit part, the icons will come back on next boot so you must also start and stop windows explorer. When you start and stop windows explorer, ONLY the icons that were active at the time of the explorer restart will be regenerated.

And finally, please only attempt this procedure if you are absolutely comfortable with it - use at your own risk.

Good luck.
