Solved Can't switch power settings

Hi,
My little sister just got a new Asus X201E Laptop with Windows 8. The problem is that it is not possible to switch between a "power saving" and "performance" profiles. Every time I try to select the "power saving" mode, it jumps back to the "performance"

The screenshot is in Czech but basically I guess you know what I'm talking about

any idea what is causing this?

yes, on the following screen, when I select "Balanced", the selection jumps back to "High Performance" just after

As a test, use the "Balanced" plan shortcut in the tutorial below to switch to it to see if that will allow it to stay selected afterwards.

I'm having the exact same problem with my Asus X202E. However, I have Power4Gear installed and it adds two custom power plans, and one of them works. Unfortunately, that's the Power4Gear-High Performance plan.

I tried to use the shortcut but the exact same thing happens. As soon as something other than Power4Gear-High Performance is chosen in immediately changes back to the standard Windows 8 High Performance plan.

I know I could just go and manually change the settings in one of the plans to be a power-saving or "balanced" mode, but that's not really fixing the problem. I may still do it, though.

Since another person with an Asus laptop (is yours touch screen as well?) has the same problem my guess is it's faulty drivers. Hopefully they fix it soon.

If you don't mind specifying a power plan for all users, you might see if using the tutorial below to do so will override it with the plan you want instead.

I had also the Power4Gear soft installed and I thought it was somehow clashing with the Windows power management, so I uninstalled it. It didn't help though.

So... the problem went away for a little over a week... but now it's back. I since tried changing all the users' power plans to Balanced as you had suggested, but it did nothing. It kind of frustrates me because I know there's an extra hour (or more) of battery life in this thing. I can only barely get by with the 3 1/2 hours it gives me.

When you adjust the settings in the power plan that you are stuck with, do they stay applied? If so, that would be another option to at least have it perform the way you wanted.

I'm sorry I was being silly and forgot to restart my computer. It did work, but I was stuck with only the balanced setting (I want full access to choose/edit all my power plans in the end), so I used the file on the page to let users choose themselves. All of a sudden, it worked! Until the computer finished loading entirely... now it's back to only High Performance and Power4Gear High Performance like before...

It seems as if a program that loads near the end a full boot is forcing the power plan to do what it does. I don't think it's Power4Gear. Could it be the Intel HD Graphics program? Has anyone heard of the program doing this? It does have power plan options, but they don't really seem to work.

If anyone has any suggestions as to what is wrong or what to do, I am open.

If you uninstall Power4Gear, does it do the same when you repeat?

I have read on other forums that Power4Gear is not the problem, and uninstalling it does nothing, and since it allows me to have 2 power plans (both are names "High Performance" but I just spend 15 minutes turning the P4G one into more of a battery saver plan already), so I don't want to uninstall it. It seems the only thing I can do right now is just change the settings for one of the power plans (which does still seem to work). I can get by with this, though I do still wonder what is up with this. I will update if I ever find an answer. Thanks again for all the help.

I found it! I wasn't hard, I just re-iterated my google search again.
Turns out, it was the Powerskin.exe file in C:\Windows\Temp\Powerskin\ folder. Just rename it and add any character (I put "NO" at the end, to scold it) and restart and voila! Power plans are working as I was used to. Now to do some light editing of their settings and everything will be peachy

Yes this problem has already come up at the TechNet forum. It was Solved there as well the same way.
