I notice I have the C: in the desktop and have reserved besides the C: in the laptop. Does this mean that when I try to recover an image to the desktop containing only the C; I won't be able to?
I only have one partition or drive in each.

Hello Brink
These are shots of the desktop-I am going to the laptop now to post those two so you can compare so please give me a minute. I have imaged both pcs with Macrium free since Acronis dropped my license (2010).

These are from the laptop showing the difference in discs.
This is in regard to being able to transfer an image from the external drive to a new hard drive.

May I ask why I could use paint for the desktop but had to try to use Word for the laptop as paint would not work for the laptop? As the Word is not viewable I can only tell you it has 2 drives one called system reserved.

Does mspaint.exe not run on the laptop at all? If not, then you might see if running a sfc /scannow command may help.

You're good to go to be able to restore a system image on the desktop and laptop. A system image will include all system drives and partitions by default.

On the desktop, it just looks like you installed Windows 8 on a formatted drive to not get a 350 MB "System Reserved" partition. A system image created on this desktop will only include the C: partition, and is what will be restored.

On the laptop, it looks like Windows 8 was installed on an unallocated drive (no partitions) to have a 350 MB "System Reserved" partition created automatically along with the C: partition. A system image created on this laptop will include both partitions, and both will be restored.

The blue Note box under step 8 in the tutorial below can give you a bit more details about the "System Reserved" partition during installation.

Hello Brink
That is great news about the transfer ability for both pcs.

The referral was very informative and a concise version will go to my" learning" folder.

I have resolved the 'paint' issue. It was an error I made not the pc as I was in a hurry to get the shots to you.

Thank you very much for taking the time to clear this up.

reiterate

Hello brink
I apologize for pestering but I am hung up a bit reading the tutorial.

I have a single partition with the C: drive but I think had a reserved partition.

When I am deleting partitions until I get to the one that says unallocated 90GB [for example], is it true that I should not format and that the reserved partition will be kept as well as Win 8 that I put on the unallocated partition?

I think I lost the reserved partition on the desktop by clicking format.

A simple set up like mine would not need formatting, correct?

Peter

No worries Peter.

Go ahead and post a screenshot of Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc) showing the full layout of the hard drive for this to see what the issue may be.

Were you wanting to do a clean install, or restore a created system image from the desktop to the desktop?

A clean install would not involve a format is what I am getting at.

The shot is desktop with one disc but the laptop which my wife is using has another disc or partition called reserved. It is the laptop with both partitions that I am asking about so I don't lose that reserved partition.
Usually I am ok with this but I am a bit red faced on this issue.

A clean install will delete everything on the HDD, then format it during installation.

If you were wanting to do a clean install of Windows 8, then yes you would delete all partitions until the disk is "unallocated", then click on Next to continue the installation.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/13375-clean-install-windows-8-upgrade.html

The screenshot above for the desktop shows that you indeed deleted the "System Reserved" partition. If you don't want to do a clean install of a Windows 8 upgrade using the link above, then I would recommend to run an Automatic Repair at boot to fix your boot manager. You may need to run it up to 3 times if it is unable to fix it until then.

On the laptop, you could create a system image and save it to a separate hard drive (ex: external). This system image would include the "Windows C: " and "Reserved" partitions. This way if you ever needed to, you could do a system image recovery to the laptop to restore it exactly how it was when the image was created.

Win 8 repair

Hi Shawn
If I have this right, my laptop is fine as it has the system reserved partition.
I was hoping the deletion I made could be fixed on the desktop, and thank you for the very detailed directions to do so.
I shall work on this and hopefully come back with good news.
I have been restoring from the external drives to the pcs successfully as is without the reserved partition but wish to include the reserved partition .
I think I need this reserved partition to transfer the image to a new hard drive if necessary.
Thank you
Peter

automatic repair

Hi Shawn
I tried automatic repair about 5 times to no avail. I don't know if Dell + OEM has anything to do with it.
Settings>change pc settings>general etc. I had no disc in the bay.
I have the old BIOS from my upgrade.

****So If I want to transfer to a new hard drive from my external drive, bottom line, can it be done like I do with Macrium when I do an image recovery to this pc?

Peter

The "Automatic Repair" will not restore the "System Reserved" partition. "Automatic Repair" was suggested to help make sure that your Windows will still be bootable since the "System Reserved" partition was deleted. That's all. :)

If the desktop is running and booting fine, then you do not have to worry about the "System Reserved" partition unless you just wanted to restore it.

If you do want to restore the "System Reserved" partition on the desktop, then since it was the 100 MB size from a previous Windows, you would really need to do a clean reinstall of Windows 8 to get the proper 350 MB size for the "System Reserved" partition.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/13375-clean-install-windows-8-upgrade.html

If you do the clean install, be sure to back up anything that you do not want to lose first since you would be deleting all partitions on the desktop until the whole disk shows as "unallocated", then clicking Next to install Windows 8.

Win 8 issues

Neither pc has the win 8 system reserved partition.
I now understand this all better.

The clean install would be to delete all partitions until only the one I want to put Win 8 on exists which is the ?800 GB unallocated one, then click next.

As it stands I can transfer the Macrium images from my external drives to either the existing pcs as they are or to a new hard drive.
I think this is all correct - feel free to correct, if you wish.

I know I have taken up an inordinate amount of time but I did not mean to take advantage, only to understand and not leave loose ends.

Thank you
Peter
P.S. the partition in question was deleted remotely by a Dell tech some time ago.

It's no problem Peter.

Macrium Reflect images can be restored to any hard drive that is large enough to fit on, but it must be restored to the same computer (motherboard) it was created on.

The clean install option is of course only if you wanted to install Windows 8 from scratch and start over. When you install Windows 8 (without UEFI) to an "unallocated" hard drive, it will create two partitions automatically during installation. The first one is the 350 MB "System Reserved", and the second is the C:\ for Windows 8.

Shawn
I really appreciate your sticking with me to resolve the fine hairs.
I understand and will amend my learning folder.
The hypotheticals, i.e., UEFI and motherboard I will address at that time.
You have a great forum and I know it takes patience for a skilled person trying to instruct an unskilled person but I tried to ask what was not intuitive.
Thank you again,
Peter

Win 8

I will, Shawn, and thank you.
I read your article lauding this OS and had to join in as I think it ranks up there with XP and 7.
Being different is not typically accepted but I have a good feeling about Win 8 -even at my level.
