Not sure if I am posting this in the right section. I have been trying for days now to do a system restore but wont let me. I have tried loads of different restore points but all I get is system restore did not complete successfully. Does anyone know why this is?

Sounds like something is corrupted. Run a disk check chkdsk /r , maybe system file checkers sfc /scannow

If those don't fix it, think I would turn it off and delete all .. and restart the computer before turning it back on and making a test restore point.

Might be a good idea to run a virus scan before you do anything.. with.. Malwarebytes or SuperAntiSpyware . Both are popular.

There's another thread on this and System Restore does not seem to work on Windows 8.

Hello, pebbles. Welcome to Eight Forums. :)

Please list your system specs including AV and browser(s) you use so as to better help you.

mikiep is correct in that it seems to be either corrupt and/or missing files or files, or a virus, or both, however I would not delete any Restore Points at this time.

I would start with checking the last AV scan. If it's been some time, I suggest a scan. I recommend Defender. If no virus found try these in order:

CHKDSK: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/6221-chkdsk-check-drive-errors-windows-8-a.html
SCANNOW: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/3047-sfc-scannow-command-run-windows-8-a.html?filter

Hope that helps. Again, welcome.

EDIT: I did some digging and also found this. You may want to look at it.

There's plenty of threads on this issue. Which one are you referring to?

Just some more of your negative connotations of 8 as I see it, Ray.

OK, Ray. Thanks for the link, although I wish you would have posted the link for the OP and others originally. Your thread involves System Restore problems with dual booting, not 8 as a sole OS. I dual boot without any problems. That may be due to the fact that I have OEM 8 Pro via DVD instead of the upgrade. Could be. We'll have to see what the OP has.

Dual booting or not, System Restore does not work with Windows 8 and Microsoft acknowledges that there is an issue.

I was trialling a few programs (NOT 'apps', that sounds so childish) the other night, and banged through six or eight system restores in a couple of hours.
They all worked.
One suggestion I can make, though, is that System Restore doesn't always play nicely with 3rd-party AV programs. If running one, it pays to disable (in some cases uninstallation is necessary) your AV before trying System Restore.
It did this in Win 7 as well.
Wenda.

That would mean getting rid of MSE.

But the problem is, even if I do a manual system restore point, it disappears next time I open Windows 8.

Thank you, Wenda. I think this is the OP's problem, for he or she still has the restore points. They're not being erased. I think it to be the AV not allowing the restore to execute correctly. Disabling the AV is suggested in the link in my edit above. Hopefully this will work for the OP. :)

Ok. There's a problem with dual booting with 7 that some are having. Murphy's law as I see it. "If anything can go wrong, it will". I don't have this problem as I can see. Could be a particular scenario. I can see that MS is aware of the problem. I'm quite sure they'll put a team on it to solve it with an update.

If true what the MS tech stated, I don't agree that they don't support dual boot as the member reported in the other thread you linked. After all, they write the software to do so. I just don't get that whatsoever.

"Getting rid of MSE". Do you think that MSE in 7 is deleting the restore points in 8?

I will post some questions in the other thread.

I will post some questions in the other thread.

I use MSE only with Windows 7 and have no issues. I don't think it has anything to do with the AV. Setting a manual restore point works, it's there when I check it and then on startup, it's gone.
