Empty Start UI tiles, Quick Launch disappeared

Hi geeks.

Anyone knows what can cause this:



One week old installation. This morning when first booted This is how my native Windows app tiles looked like, third party tiles OK. Also the Quick Launch toolbar on desktop Taskbar was missing.

SFC / SCANNOW finds nothing.

I have restore points and system image, no problems there, but before restoring I would like to understand this and try to find a fix.

Before getting into to serious restoration, there are some additional simple things you can try that might work--beyond sfc /scannow: system restore especially if you know about when your problem began and automatic repair (may need to run multiple times--say 3).

If no luck with those attempts, then you could try creating a new user account of the same type with which you typically login. Copy everything you will need to the new account (from C: > Users > Old User Account) if the new account works. Then, delete the old account. You can go back to the original user name similarly. Before you do so, make sure that deleting the original user account also deleted that users folder in C: > Users. Sometimes this folder does not get deleted. If not, then going back to the original user name creates a minor only superficial "problem." To delete the folder, you may have to take ownership. I would not go back the the original user name using any other procedure.

As this error also included missing Quick Launch Toolbar I suspect it has something to do with roaming profile. However, I am not closer to find a solution or cause as there's nothing to find on here or Google.

No drastic measures needed, when I did not find any fixes for this strange thing I just restored to a restore point from a day earlier. However, I am interested in this so if everyone finds a "cure" for this and even better a cause for it, I would be happy to hear from it.

I am not marking this thread solved yet although my issue disappeared with system restore as there's no clear cause known and therefore no real fix. I consider system restore more like a workaround than fix.

Just for a FYI, Automatic Repair will not help with issues in Windows itself. The Automatic Repair tool automates common diagnostic and repair tasks for only startup issues like a non-bootable Windows 8 instead.
