stops responding

Why do so many programs just stop working, stop responding for no apparent reason??? This includes IE9, e-mail service, new printer/scanner installation, etc, etc, etc. Sometimes even writing a letter or "Save as" just stops responding. How can this be??? Windows says "we're looking for a solution", but nothing ever shows up. Is there no diagnostic that can identify the failure? Is it memory, conflict, what can be causing these annoying interruptions??? Mostly rebooting the system will clear things up.

My setup: Windows 8 PRO, CPU Intel i7 3.40 GHz 64 bit, 16 GB RAM, INTEL SSDSC solid state hard drive 223 GB (about one quarter full). I did not have these problems with Windows 7, or the Windows 8 pre releases.

I like to start with simple things that might work: system restore especially if you know about when your problem began, sfc /scannow (may need to run multiple times--say 3), automatic repair (may need to run multiple times--say 3).

No luck with those attempts. Try creating a new user account of the same type you typically login with? Copy everything you will need to the new account if it works. Then, delete the old account. You can go back to the original user name similarly. Before you do so, make sure that deleting the original user account also deleted that users folder in C: > Users. Sometimes this folder does not get deleted. If not, then going back to the original user name creates a minor only superficial "problem." To delete the folder, you may have to take ownership. I would not go back the the original user name using any other procedure.

I have the same problem. The only way I found to correct it is to reboot the system. I can't find any indicator as to when or why this happens. I normally install a new operating system 6 months after it comes out so Microsoft can fix some the bugs all new operating systems have. Disregarding my own advice I installed Win 8 two months after its release.

I usually blame it on the computer ,not the os when going to a new os ,how did your computer check out when you ran the Windows upgrade assistant ,Upgrade to Windows 8 - Microsoft Windows

I ran Windows 7 on my computer prior to the upgrade. I ran the upgrade assistant prior to upgrading. No problems were found. I've tried running sfc and performing a system restore, all without fixing the problem. I've noticed that when applications won't start if I check for them in Task Manager I can find them running in the background. Deleting these 'hidden' tasks some times fixes the problem for that particular program. I've had 6 instances of IE running one time in the background. When IE works correctly it runs in the foreground.
