I try to give my pc a thorough cleaning every three months. Then I dismantle the entire pc and clean every part of it. Making it dustfree etc. By doing this I try to avoid the clogging of dust. Also the pc stays silent when runnig due to the fact that the fans don't have to work very hard to keep the pc cool.

Here are some pics of my pc after I finished cleaning it.

So I was wondering. Is cleaning your pc every three months too much? How ofter do you all give your pc a good makeover?

Sometimes I bend down and give it a nice blow to the fan, does that count?

Does anyone else notice that their keyboard gets dust on all the keys that they don't use? o.0

I clean my systems whenever I open the box for another reason - e.g. installing a SSD or PCI-e card. But that is the rare case. Hate to crawl under the desk and unwire everything.

I suppose that if you have a dog or cat or if you have a lot of children running around raising a lot of dust, it would be more important to clean your computer on a regular basis. But at my age I and my wife don't move around that fast any longer and don't raise much dust.:D

But unfortunately there will always be dust no matter how slow we move. :D
Got one attic for instance where nothing moves and there's a layer of dust that settled with ages.

Just like snow in Antarctica or Greenland:
-it snows a few centimeter/inches a year and somehow after thousands of years there's the thickest layer on the planet!

Hi there
I have one Linux file and print server that's been up for nearly 12 months just stuck away in a closet -- I daren't even THINK of opening the case --it would surely fill a large Vacuum cleaner's dust bag. !!!

Server is logged on to using VNC and a remote console so there's no monitor attached to it --it's just a box stuck away doing its job quite nicely.

I'm not sure in general whether "PC cleaning" in normal use is worth the effort. OK once you open the case to change / add hardware then yes --another issue-- but coming from an Engineering background my primary instinct is "If it ain't broke don't fix it".

Especially if the PC is old -- some connectors etc can be quite easily and accidentally damaged so my gut feel is especially on older gear to leave well alone unless you have to do something with it.

Cheers

Hi there
I'm sure tiny fan bearings just LOVE Beach Sand !!!. I thought one of the best uses for Beach Sand was for Sandblasting things like old Spark plugs in Cars (pre "Injector days") and removing paint / old varnish etc from Metal objects.

Never and then some

I had to laugh a little when I read this thread.....it reminded me of my old tech days when I visited remote locations. On several occasions I opened PC cases to find the inside completely covered in dust to the point you could not even see a single chip on the motherboard.

Having seen many in this condition, I came to the conclusion that boards are far more durable than one would suspect.

Who knows if they are less durable today than back in the 90's but another thing I used to do is fly for hours in turbo props with the PCs back in cargo at -45 degrees. After landing, you would haul them out, and as soon as I got to the hotel turn mine on with frost still on the mother board.

Never had a problem!

Since I OC'ed all my PC's so clean cases and good air flow will keep the temperature down,
I use an electric leaf blower, took the side panels off, put it on the table in the back yard, keep the blower about 2 feet away from the PC and blow the hell out of it from top, rear, sides for about 1 minute and all done. Off course, before I put the panels back on, I double check all connections in the PC. Never fail !!!

- Some people use the Spray can cleaner which cover a small area if spray too close, if cover large area then the air is too weak.
- Others use electric air compressor but be careful with this because of the water built in inside the tank and if your MB/Components get wet, you can kiss it good bye.

Cheers

Whenever I work on a PC, I use an air compressor to blow out the innards, power supply, fans (while holding the blades, preventing them from moving), CPU cooler. I also remove the heatsink and replace the thermal compound with Arctic Silver, replace any fans that are too far gone and place Scotch pads in front of the intake fans, behind the bezel to stop some of the dust and pet hair from being sucked into the case. When we had desktop PC's, there was less crap getting sucked into the case, but once we all went to tower cases, sitting on the floor, the debris getting sucked into the cases increased exponentially.

I clean my PC's about every 3 months or whenever I open them up to replace/upgrade components. By cleaning the gaming PC I've been working on the past week, I was able te drop the temps by at least 5 degrees! Of course, I also cleaned up the wiring, replaced the crappy fans and reapplied the waterblock properly, which all helped!

The main reason for me to clean the pc is not durability. I concur that the hardware can sustain a lot of dust. But as some of you already said, keeping the pc clean keeps the fan from working overhours and keeps the noise and temperature down.

Sincs the pc stands in my livingroom little to no noise is a must! :)

I've been pretty careful about dust in my system. I do clean it periodically and I used a 'leaf blower' once all over my room!

From the start in my electronic building I have always used 'DeOxIt Gold' or Cramolin, or Tweak! or whatever name Stabilant 22 was going by at the time on all my memory DIMMs leads, CPU leads, PCI card leads, audio contacts, USB pins, Firewire connectors etc. Anything that was gold plated got a shot of that stuff before I connected anything to it.

I usually would connect and re-connect a few times to set the contact.

Then I'd never remove, bump, rub or disturb that part again as long as it worked.

I've been doing this since about 1979 and I've built a lot of analog and digital hardware.
{See ancient pictures here: http://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/109292859448286386610/albums/5719228364854519505 }

As far as I know, I have never encountered any contact problems.

As for heat, I have an open case design - the Cooler Master HAF 932 Advanced case is literally full of holes, and has 4 fans. Plus the CPU cooler has a fan.

I use to burn incense in my room, but lately I've switched to aromatherapy essential oils to lessen dust.

A few times a year I open the case and suction off loose dust, then blow parts with a dust-buster air-can blaster.

My wife loves our iRobot Roomba 780 - it is remarkable on the floors and carpets.

I keep the tower on the top of my desk, off the floor. I use Urashima Taro Flexi Ties on all the cables and clamp them down with cable ties.

Lots of surge protectors on the lines and I have a separate power entry on my room. I used to run a lot of analog gear that needed power, so I added it a long time ago. For a while I had an Ultra-Isolation transformer in use, but I found over time that our Sunnyvale power is pretty good, clean and stable. The local transformer for our block is underground a few houses up the street.

Hi there
I suppose I'm the odd one out here -- I only ever bother cleaning the inside if replacing or upgrading hardware. My last two desktops are essentially retired now -- both being used as servers which run for months on end between re-boots and don't even have monitors connected.

I REFUSE to allow anyone to have a computer in my living room -- that's for relaxation etc. There's plenty of space in the rest of the house where people can use computers (even visitors) so noise issues aren't important. My living room isn't an extension of a "Work space" so I BAN computers there. -- Each to their own of course and obviously when I'm at home lack of space isn't an issue with our population density. !! (Might be different if I'm in a large city centre like Madrid / Paris / Brussels/Manchester/London etc and living in a 1-bed or studio apartment though).

I can stream video / music to the living room from my network without needing a computer connection -- the TV has decent network connectivity so I don't even need the computer for that type of functionality either.

Cheers
jimbo

:roflmao:
But some hardware is really tested for military standards so even Rambo can have a favorite pc today.

Even some plain hardware boards can be more durable than expected, I agree.

But in the end you can even get failures in unexpected conditions or locations, for instance on your own desktop, even without -45 degrees. Luckily, I never had this issues so hardware is pretty tough, that's for sure.

I clean my 8 desktop computers every season change, so its 4 times a year and use an air compressor, been doing this for years without issues.

The "Cleaning Award" should be yours... once a year is here enough but that depends on how concerned or tidy you are and the climate you have in the area.

Cheers

If I had the luxury to have a spare PC/ work room in my house I might consider cleaning the pc less often. But I live in a two room appartment (which costs more then a nice big house in, say the midwest USA :().

Besided that I totaly understand your opinion of keeping your living room free of "Work space"! Good for you that you have the space and luxury to do so!!!
