How do you make Windows 8 make Restore points on every system change without manually doing it yourself? Like drivers, programs, etc.

Hello setinhere,

If you have system protection turned on for your Windows C: drive, then it normally does automatically create restore points by default before you install drivers, programs, Windows Updates, etc....

However, it's always a good idea to manually create a restore point yourself before doing anything that you may want to undo if needed.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/4690-restore-point-create-windows-8-a.html

If need be, you may also would like to increase the amount of maximum disk space used for restore points to be able to keep more of them available.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorial...nge-maximum-disk-space-usage-windows-8-a.html

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

Well I guess I have a problem then. I got caught with the nvidia endless boot loop, and when I went to advance boot option to restore from last saved, it didn't show any saved points for the past two months. The amount of time I've had Windows 8 installed. So I had to do a refresh and lost everything. When I finished that, I checked to see if my restore was active and it was. I then tested to see if it was creating restore points by installing the USB 3 drivers for my motherboard. Nothing, it didn't create one. So what is broken in my setup that would prevent this form happening? My system specs are in my profile.

Oh and when I checked it the first time after my mishap, it did have one restore point. I guess it creates one after a system refresh. Why it created one then and not afterwords is puzzling me.

It's set for 1% or 9.1 Gigs. Is System Restore really that unreliable? Even back in Windox XP I never had a problem with it. Did the that go away for Vista, 7, and 8?

9Gig should hold a few restore points (10 to 15 appr.). As you can see for yourself, system restore is not to be trusted. Restore points have the habit of disappearing all the time for no explainable reason.

I use system restore also but don't bet on it. With my Macrium images I never even once had any problems. They saved my bacon many times - and I have full control and see what I am doing. I don't look into a black box.

LOL well I never had any problems with system restore win XP. I guess MS broke it afterwards. It is really a shame on how MS seems to fix things that aren't broken.

Na, never heard of this Macrium Images, I'm saving money up to get a home server so it will fix my current problem. Until then I'll just remember to do a manual system restore for any installs that I do.

There have been a few issues where some defrag programs will wipe out your restore points when used.

Do you dual boot? There have been a few known issues with dual booting that will wipe your restore points each time you startup the other OS.

Plus you lose the restore points (except the first one) when you resize the shadowstorage.

You never heard about Macrium because you are new on the block. I think around here, many people use it. I can see that from the questions and PMs that I get on my Macrium tutorial.

No I don't dual boot, When I upgraded I did the upgrade over xp, but then read about some horror stories for doing that. so I then just did a format and then clean install of 8 pro twice to activate it.

Hmmm I'll remember that, thanks for the info!

I am new, and I'm always looking to learn.

But like I said, I'll just save up and get a home server. I'm currently looking at the HP ProLiant G7 N54L and Windows Server 2012 Essentials for my fix. I figure within the next 4 months I'll have it set up and running, then I wont have to worry about 8's creaky system restore.

You can get an excellent Image Backup program like (LINK >) Macrium Reflect for free, the free version is very good.
  • An image can be made while you are using your computer so it's not inconvenient.
  • The image will be an exact copy of your OS and/or data, you can choose.
  • No re-installing programs.
  • No updates re-installed.
  • No re-activating Windows.
  • An image can be made in 10-15 minutes and restored in 10 minutes or less depending on the size.
  • Best to store the backup image on a separate HDD, external HDD works well.
  • CD/USB stick version of the program so if Windows will not start you can still perform the backup restore.

Unless you need a server for something else, with an Image backup all you need is a storage HDD.
With an image backup and a working Restore point, you will never loose and data or have to Clean Install.
whs's tutorial is very good and explains everything.

With a cloud based recovery plan you have to consider the time it will take to upload 10-20 GB of data or more, and should you need it will have to be downloaded, may take several hours vs 10 minutes with a program like Macrium.

How big is your allocated maximum shadowstorage.

Btw: it is a lot safer to create images. Those you control yourself, you can store them where you like and add/delete them whenever you see fit. I recommend free Macrium for that: Imaging with free Macrium - Windows 7 Forums

Sure. I installed onto my Win 8 Tablet in the default install directory (C:\Program Files). Then I plug in my Seagate Go Flex external HDD because that's where I want the backup to be. It keeps asking me to select a source (I figure that should be the tablet c:\ drive but there is no selection box or a browse box or anything allowing selection of the source. There is absolutely nothing in the rather sparse help file describing how to select the source nor does there seem to be any way to search the Macrium Forums on the web - nothing,nada...

In fact I installed/reinstalled 2x with the same result. As a matter it wants to make a backup of my Seagate External HDD! Well, there are other backup solutions so I figure to just move on. Butr thanks for asking.[

Problem is that I tried just that - i.e., went directly to create a backup and it wants to backup my attached Seagate GoFlex - kind of dumb since I figure it should at least autodetect where the Win 8 installation is!
In fact clicking on the "Create a Backup" does absolutely nothing.

Two things possible - a borked installation (although I installed/reinstalled three times) or a corrupted installer. Also the first screen that pops up when I start the program keeps asking that I should make a recovery file and should download some MS software (a 1.9 Gb file) to do so.

At this point I'm stumped but IDK also why Macrium would not want to know about this but I see no way to respond to them

OK Problem solved but not good - turns out that the free version cannot make a backup on a GPT drive using EFI - not a good solution because most, if not all Win 8 tablets use this kind of storage (particularly using SSD's) - lot's of other free software to make backups but thanks for taking interest in the issue.
