Hello
My Macrium image shows 13 GB and my EaseUs shows 25 GB . What could be the problem?
Thank you

EaseUs Todo free I use.. think its default is no compression.. then it has a medium and also high compression options.. They do make a huge difference in backup file size.

just looked .. main image is 20gb.. where as my c drive is 52 .. on medium compression. It does amazingly fast incremental image backups. Little while ago less than 2 minutes. And 30 seconds on a file/folder no compression backup incremental separately.

EaseUS Todo

Hello
I really liked the program but the size threw me off and I had used Macrium before.
Macrium is easier for an average person like myself and its compression is up front.
I would not have been sorry if I had used your program and gotten used to it. It is a big company too.
I may try it yet.
Thank you

>>Macrium failed on me once so I quit it. I tried to recover from the desktop program. I learned that with Acronis I have best luck when I use the disc. I think that was my mistake with Macrium so I just use the disc. I was enticed by EaseUs Todo and may yet try it if Macrium fails. Presently I have the Win 8 native program as a backup to Macrium which is my primary. I think Macrium will be good if I don't tinker It has to be done right I guess.
BTW, does EaseUs update often? I ask because Macrium does and I have been given different advice as to what to do. One person said nothing, another said to make a new disc. Do you know the answer?

Don't think I would burn a new rescue dvd each new version. Windows image always has worked well for me too.

I save an image to a usb drive that doesn't have much room.. its a drive out of a 4 yr old Toshiba laptop that the power system died in.. someday maybe I'll fix it. EaseUs goes there plus to a dedicated small partition, my lenovo E drive.

EaseUS todo updates sometimes,, but not constantly or often like the Macrium seems to. Its so fast for the incrimentals its nice for me to manually make one, rather than system restore point when I do something that could be a gotcha.

cds

It really gets confusing because if you are pc literate you can read what the Macrium update is for but many of us are not. I was told there may be a fix in the update that the new cd would attend to and for the price of a cd I should be safe. Of 12 people 6 say burn a new disc and 6 say not to. Then there are those who say create a new image.
I wish I had my Acronis back. I never updated anything and it worked flawlessly. I have a license but it too is confusing. I don't know if they are going to yearly subscriptions now or life license. Mine was for life but does not work with Win 8. I can get an upgrade for one pc for $30 but then need another full price for the 2nd for $54 but then there is a 3 pc pack for $79.
I really wish this Acronis fiasco had not happened. But now that it did I am really confused. I thought I was all set with Windows as a backup and Macrium as primary but can't spend the year burning new updated cds.
For $80 and a lot of removing and installing I could have Acronis for the pcs in the house which is hard to swallow more on principle than on cost. Whose to say they won't pull the same gimmick next year, too?
Excuse my venting; I guess that is what we do when we are frustrated.

Sounds like you should just stick with Windows image for your image backup.. and Macrium as a fail safe... and don't update Macrium except until they have a major version change.. or maybe after windows does a sp1. Test it? make sure it works once. Look in your event logs to be sure you don't have some warning there for vss when it runs. Be happy.

You know whats saved me more than anything when I forget.... my DropBox account saves the Docs and Pics folders. And its like up to the minute current :) Other than those folders, really can install windows fresh easy.. just adding back all the windows updates is the painful part.

I had Acronis 2013 installed and the Shell Extension caused file explorer to freeze (this is a known problem) so I uninstalled it.
I am now using free Macrium 5.1 Build 5529 and very happy with it. It does what I need and fast too, took < 7' for the 42GB image backup.
I did not bother to create the rescue disk instead I downloaded an already built by one of the member (whs) in this forum and put it in a 2GB thumb drive.
Make sure that you verify the image after every backup and it will never fail.

@Mikiep: Don't think I would burn a new rescue dvd each new version
You don't need to burn a DVD for rescue disk, just put it in a thumb drive and re-use it if you need to create a new rescue.

>>Some good ideas so I will respond individually.
1-When you say test it do you mean to see if the recue media can find the image or actually run an image?
2-I am only vaguely familiar with the event viewer. Where and when should I look into it?
3-Are you referring to the file recovery being turned on so you can files you lose when you mention Drop Box? I do keep all otes that are private on 2 flash drives as the olds of both breaking at the same time would-be quite high.
4-Lastly, are you suggesting refreshing rather than an image?
Thank you for the tips but as relatively average user I don't want good advice to slip by unused; learning is what I am looking for.

1. Test an image to me means ... make an image and try it for real, reimage the system. Have a separate windows control panel image made too so, if your Macrium fails or screws up, you can use it to get back everything if needed.
2. Event Viewer.. you should take a look into it, too much to try to explain here. Right click your desktop computer icon and select manage. You will see Event Viewer there... look around. You can also right click lower left corner of your display and choose Event Viewer, but there's more to learn in the Management console. You might want to check out Performance, right click Monitoring and choose Reliability if you are not familiar with that.
3. DropBox is an online file storage/back-up that you associate user folders to it..- it automatically synchronizes and uploads any changes in those folders. For me, if I reinstall windows or use say a 1 week old image .. as soon as I install DropBox all my pictures and documents start downloading.. only the ones that might be missing or have become out of date.... any old ones are updated to my last current saved file dates.
4. Refresh is cool, well it would be if it didn't throw away all the installed programs... might investigate windows recimg.exe .. or maybe take a look at recImg.com pages. In your spare time.

I much better understand what you do and thank you for explaining. I will try the image test with the native program as a backup.
I have been watching some tutorials and Macrium is similar to my old Acronis. I hope it works as well. Instead of making new discs with every update, which is often, I use a cd-rw. I don't know why but Macrium really likes to update compared to Aronis. I might have a look at EaseUs. I have tried Macrium except the last step, so far, and it seems ok.
I have been in the event viewer and will follow up with your tips now.
I did not know drop box was a third party program so was not familiar with it. I hope I get around to it someday but not right now.
Thank you again for the help.

Hello
I have been scouring the internet for quite awhile and never was referred to this neither did I find it on my own. This came out of nowhere.
Now I have to evaluate my options.
You indicated you had success with this program. I have a 64 bit machine with Win 8 and have to go back to the site to check on the requirements.
Thank you so much for the link. Changing all may well be worth it. Could you please tell me what this means,"It makes winpe media without needig to d/l waik/wadk." I can make a Linux rescue disc but had trouble with the Bart PE.

I just used Acronis True Image Home a little over a week ago and it worked flawlessly. I booted up with the rescue disk that I created using the program and it easily and quickly re-imaged my SSD from the image file on the 2TB hard drive in the same PC. I stick with it because it works every time!

Hi Peter,

Aomei Backuper comes as 32 and 64 bit files. If you ask it to create boot media, it will do that from the files you already have on your HD.

The pe media it creates is much better than the linux iso you normally find in free programs.

Most other programs require you to d/l several gigs of stuff from MS.

I have used it several times. It worked perfectly every time.

Good array of functions for a free program, too.Simple to use - well laid out - can't think of any negatives.

If I only used a free one, it would likely be Aomei - my favourite right now.

I also have Paragon HDM 12 ( not free ), that has a lot of extra advanced functions you can't get in any free programs - or in other paid programs come to that.

Macrium failed me once after I had resized partitions... so at that time I decided to try EaseUS todo as a back up to the macrium and after time I guess dropped macrium altogether.

You were apparently trying to squeeze two gallons into a one gallon bottle. All you had to do is to resize the image to the size of your resized partition and it would have worked.

Might be, but at the time a windows 2 or 3 week old image fit quick and easy enough,.

I found out, and was told Acronis for win 8 requires a new license.

Correct me if I am wrong.

I am currently looking into your new program as I have already set up Macrium as my primary and Win 8 native as my secondary. Macrium has a good reputation.
I am in the process of investigating your program and thank you very much for the referral and follow up information.
May I ask, did you use the program or the disc to recover? I have always used the rescue disc because otherwise I have had issues.
