Disk Defragmenting may take a long time especially if it hasnt been done after a long time.
First make sure you clean up old files. press Win+W key at same time then type" free up" you should see an option "Free up disk space by deleting..." run this. Clean up old files and continue on with defragmenting. You said it takes a long time to analyze you can rest assure that it may also take a long time to defragment.

defrag made to pass 2 at 95% and this took all of 12 hours before I shut the pc down for the nite
any idea why so long and should I just let it keep running?

Try IObit's Defrag tool, "Smart Defrag 2.7" if you wish. Works fine on my laptop, and is awesome when in conjunction with IObit Advanced System Care Pro. It's not a hell of a lot faster than Windows Defragmentation, but it's much, much, better.

Reasons why it would take so long
1) Slow HDD, which become even slower when fragmented.
2) Not enough free space will slow it down significatly.
3) A slow CPU won't help either, obviously there are a lot of 3rd party tools, personally i use Defraggler because I have more control of the defragmentation process.

im trying defraggler after doing a complete disk cleanup
I started defrag yesterday at 1pm and left it running and is still running
it say it is fragmented 27% but only 1% is defragged
my question is...........how long is a long time to defrag?
I am running win8 64-bit and the newest i.e. edition.
I was running win7 64bit and defrag would on get to pass2@95%
I thot installing win8 would fix this problem but it seems hopeless!
thanks for all and any input

I set mine to defragment daily .
Try disk cleanup.
Try CCleaner.
It won't hurt to leave it run overnight or all day.
I have win 8 pro.

isn't running the defrag for 24hours and only getting a 1% defragment saying that it could run for days and not complete?
I ran it for 16hours and only got a 1% defrag
should I instead call Microsoft support since I just downloaded win8 64bit pro?
this is so confusing that it wont complete or even show better progress.

You could just do a recovery install.?
Complete full install.?
Get thumb drive to keep things you want.!
I used a 16 GB thumb drive to back up my entire computer for recovery.

You could try Check Disk to check for errors.

I understand your concern about defragmenting taking a long time, If it took a super long time for me I know I would be concern too. How much free space is in your HDD?
How old is this computer, or more specifically how old is the HDD?
It may be time to do hardware test on this HDD, who knows it may going faulty, are there any signs of it going faulty. For example constant blue screens, computer locks up/freezes, or some files take longer than usual to open or even view(you double click on a folder and it takes a long time to view the contents)

well im back and am totally upset about this situation.............the reason I installed win8 pro was to solve the defrag issue in win7 64bit. I downloaded it off the win8pro site. so I tried defraggler and after 2 days only got to 2%defrag. in the meantime I ordered the dvd for win8pro and am wondering if I can do a total clean install and if that will solve the problem?
I am running windows defrag now to see if it might pass the previous defrag of pass2 94%........im not a genius at pc's so if I do a clean install of 8 will the disc do that?

So... Make sure you have everything backed up.

From desktop, hit the Windows key on your keyboard to enter RT (Metro). Type "remove" and on the right of the screen, select settings. Select "Remove everything and re-install Windows". You will be prompted to insert your disc media.

Done.

In my opinion, this will be well worth the time invested. There is something obviously not right with your previous 7 install, and you just upgraded on top of that. Once you install your drivers, Windows updates, and software, make a backup image of your drive.

If you ever run into any future problems, you can just restore the clean image you have saved, and a whole lot of time.
