Solved Correctly Removing Possible Buggy Drivers?

Hi Guys,

I'm a pretty new here but I try to help people out with BSOD and Crash Dump Analysis. I'm by no means an expert but am getting better slowly and know enough to get by.

What I don't know is how to advise people on how to remove drivers that are possibly buggy and could be responsible for causing a BSOD. I advise trying to remove the driver via the control panel/un-install first but often times the program associated with the driver is not available and therefore can't be un-installed the correct way. What is then the correct action to take?, I sometimes advise renaming the driver to filename.bak but some people say that could result in system to stop booting. Is it just a matter of experience and judgement call in knowing which drivers you can an cannot do this to?

Any information on this would be appreciated...

-cheers

Thanks topgun I never considered using Autoruns for that but it does seem to have the drivers listed which can be disabled. Since no-one else has chimed in I'll mark this one as solved, cheers!

It does more than just disable the driver. If you click on Entry from the Menu or right click on it, you'll have more options ie. search online for info about the driver, where it is in the registry and file location and its .inf file so if you decide to uninstall it, just delete these from registry, the .sys file and .inf file. However, if you are using Windbg to analyze the crash dump, often it only gives you a glue of where the problem might be but not necessary that particular driver causing the BSOD, so it is better to disable it first.
