Solved Shut Down Laptop With Lid Open?

Been using a desktop my whole life; now I have my first laptop.

Is it possible to shut down a Windows 8 laptop while the lid is open? Or does the lid have to be down? My question applies equally to shutting down 'Windows 8 style' - i.e., partial hibernation - and completely shutting down.

I am able to shut down my laptop with the lid open...but then the laptop restarts itself after a few seconds, and I'm thinking it might have to do with the lid being open.

EDIT:
Never mind, my laptop restarts after shutting down even with the lid closed.

What you are looking for is called "power options" if you go to search or what looks like the magnifying glass at the top right when you move your mouse there just type power options and it will be in the "settings" search, or just find control panel and search in control panel and after all that look for "choose what the power buttons do"

Thanks for your help. No matter what I do, the laptop will not remain powered off. It will power off, but then it will automatically power on after about 5 seconds.

I've tried several methods to shut down the computer, all with the same results:

  • Press the SHIFT key when selecting Restart; on the next screen click on Turn off your PC
  • Issue the shutdown command: shutdown.exe /s /f /t 0
  • In Power Options, setting the role of the Power button to Shut down, then pressing the Power button
  • All the above with the lid open, and with the lid closed

The laptop is plugged into A/C power.

Is there something I've missed?

Yes, most laptops don't care about lid positioning when shutting down. It should shut down without requiring you to close the lid.
