Try this
Active@ File Recovery. Product Features: NTFS, exFAT,FAT32,HFS+,Ext2fs/Ext3fs
I used it once on a formatted drive and recovered 90%+ of the files on it.

There is a trial and this is what they say about it
Quick Recovery Steps

  • Download and install Active@ File Recovery on your computer.
(Avoid installing it to the disk where your lost files are located)
  • Scan the disk
  • Search for deleted files
  • Free version allows recovery of up to a 64kb files
  • Verify the file integrity using file Preview
  • When your data is found, the free version can be easily activated to allow recovery of any size file without re-installing the software and re-scanning the disks

Its on sale at the moment.

Good luck.

If you did a quick format, you should be able to recover successfully.

If you did a Full format - sorry.

I am sure that the drive I recovered some time ago using Active File Recovery had been formatted with 'Full Format'.

You'll only know when you try it.
If you download and try any recovery software it will tell you what it is possible to recover.
You have nothing to loose, so why not try 2 or 3 different packages and see what they report - then go for the one that offers you the most.

I use Recuva myself, and find it to be very good, if slow on a deep scan.

Another very handy program is 'NTFS Undelete', it's small and fast.

'SoftPerfect File Recovery' is very small, and does not need to be installed. It
works well on FAT32 thumb-drives and the like.

I've had successes with all of these, and can recommend them.

Hi there

I'd suggest using a different approach. (To the OP -- I know this might be a bit late for your particular issue -- but for NEX TIME !!).

Windows 8 has the "History" feature -- where it maintains changes to data so you can recover from the history log.

The other IMO 100% reliable solution is to take REGULAR BACKUPS and KEEP DECENT ARCHIVES ON SEPARATE MEDIA.

For any CRITICAL data created between running your normal backup jobs just save it immediately to another media such as a USB stick -- cheap 32 GB sticks are available ==perfectly adequate for this purpose.

I NEVER change a presentation or a spread sheet without first backing up the original to a USB stick.

Simple rules like this will save a lot of grief even if you have WHOLE DISKS that become defective.

I always maintain TWO copies of backup as well -- HDD is CHEAP these days --you can use SLOW CHEAP HDD's for backup since you are only using these as a data store and they don't (in fact shouldn't be) online after you've taken the backups.

Cheers
jimbo

It is so easy now to backup files automatically.
Programs such as SyncBackPro have features so you can set backups to run automatically using profiles which run automatically when you insert a USB drive.

- Set an incremental profile to backup 'My Documents' when you insert a backup USB disc called 'Backup1'
- Set an incremental profile to backup 'My Documents' + 'My Pictures' when you insert a backup USB disc called 'Backup2'

Now each time a file in those directories is changed (or at a regular interval such as daily) just pop in the first USB drive and the backup runs automatically, remove it put in the second and viola both backups done no effort.

What could be simpler - and can be a life saver.

... and if you have bad sectors etc. as well, then this here: ...

They are both great tools and helped me a lot in the past, even if the drives was only recognised but not normal accessible anymore.

Don't know which is best. But, See post #30 of this thread. Apparently, TestDisk did a great job while running ubuntu on a flash drive. His need for data recovery was very severe. Testdisk was mentioned earlier above.

Hi there
Easus, Macrium and a host of others have problems when using UEFI Secure Boot systems.

Acronis 2013 works fine with UEFI secure boot --- just switch off the secure boot protection in the BIOS (secure boot), enter the 4 digit code and then you can boot Acronis from USB / DVD etc.

After backup / restore re-enable the boot protection in the BIOS (enable secure boot) -- the key (4 digit) will be shown on the BIOS screen.

UEFI secure boot prevents "Legacy OS'es" such as W7/XP/Any flavour of Linux" from booting - so you need to temporarily disable the secure boot protection.

Only "Signed OS'es" such as W8 will boot from a Secure boot enabled UEFI BIOS.

Laptops such as the newer HP Envy series all have UEFI secure boot these days.

Cheers
jimbo
