i am using win 8 64 bit. I installed some app from app store. I use LAN but there is no file history issue. Primarily there was no problem. but now my c drive is filling very rapidly and now it is only 221 MB (total space 34.6 GB). i uninstalled some of the apps(also some defaults) and clean c drive with provided cleaner on a weekly basis, but there is no result. only few megabytes are freed. no virus issues found by Avast!free antivirus. I change my page file direction(pagefile.sys) to anoher drive. What can i do now please help...........

I checked the drive with easeus home edition and windirstat. windirstat show me 27GB total space and easeus show me full 34.6 GB, and the total properties of my system drive is 26.9 GB when i selected the total files of the system drive. What is eating my grape? my precious 6GB space?

  1. You can delete the downloaded windows update file under
    "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download"
  2. Delete anything under TEMP folders
  3. Right click on Computer->Advanced system Settings
    - System Protection->Configure->Delete
This will delete all the restore points
  4. Go back to previous screen and click on Create to create on single restore point.

Regards moving the C:\Windows\Installer files to a D drive by uses of a symbolic link.
Chronicles of Nushy: Save precious SSD storage by moving the Windows Installer files

How do you actually go about deleting the protected system folder C:\Windows\Installer and its many subfolders?

One article for Windows 7 suggested making a bat file so that System in used as higher privileges than Administrator by running a bat file:

sc Create SysCMD binPath="cmd /K start" type=own type=interact
sc start SysCMD

This just flashes on Windows 8 giving no chance to select buttons.
Help?

(If it worked on W8) It suggest removing folders by running

rmdir /s /q C:\Windows\Installer

How to Free C:\ Drive Disk Space in Windows 7 and Reduce System Size?

I am nervous and unsure about deleting system files so would appreciate some guidance.

I only have 5.5Gb left on my 64Gb SSD and am trying to gain space for when Windows 8.1 comes out. Anyone know how much free space I will need for the upgrade?

1. You can also free up about 4 to 6GBs of space if you do not use the hibernate feature via "powercfg /h off"
The above require that you open an elevated command prompt and enter the message without quotes.

IMPORTANT!
2. If you use the "fast startup" feature, you cannot do the above because some information needs to be written to hiberfil.sys.

However, you can shrink it a bit and get back about 2 GBs of space via "powercfg /h /size 50"
This second method will allow adequate room for "fast startup" to continue to work.

Summary:

No hibernate or fast startup - Recover 6 GBs via procedure #1
Just use fast startup - Recover 2 GBs via procedure #2

Good luck.

Thanks for the old thread FYI. I didn't even bother to look at the original post date. Just saw that someone posted 4 hours prior to me. Oh well. Thanks again.
Oh no. I just wonder if the original poster bothers to look at it. However, it will help others with the same problem. Cheers

Thanks - that will save another 6.6Gb!!
I understood from the Forum Tutorial at:
Hibernate - Enable or Disable - Windows 7 Help Forums
that switching off via "powercfg /h off" automatically switched off the "fast startup" feature also??
Is this no longer true?

The industry does not see to have grasped that these tiny SSD drives cannot take the bloat that a mechanical disk can handle.
Surprised no one seems to have made a utility that automates all this for SSD users.
