Solved System Recovery not working

I have attempted to do a system recover using both system set recovery points and one that I made, and all have failed. I get a message that says the problem may be with my antivirus program. I have Bitdefender Total Security 2013 - I have shut that down and turned off win 8 firewall and shut off my internet connection and it still fails. I have tried several restore points and all with the same result
Any ideas would be gratefully received - apart from this I am liking what I see with Win 8
many thanks

recovery install

If you do a recovery install you will have your files but will lose installed programs (non-microsoft).
You will need to go to Windows Update & get all the updates you added too.

Thanks for your reply medab1.
Yes I am aware of having to reinstall, but my problem is that I cannot acturally get a restore to work by using a system made or user made restore point. They always fail with the result as in my original thread. For instance, I use them if I want to install a program that I am not sure about - I make a restore point and then install the prog. If I wish to remove it if it screws the system up (which I have had happen!) I can just go back to the restore point I made and not do a windows refresh which I had to do recently which as you mentioned, takes me back to a clean system but without any of the (non MS) progs I have installed since installing win8. I have now installed a backup app which allows me to recovery my C drive, but going back to a system restore point of an hour ot two ago is very useful, and all of my installed stuff is still there.
Thanks again

It seems a number of people are now confused by restore points and the new restore option in Windows8.

You are clearly talking about restoring your system to an earlier condition by using system restore and a restore point, not the system wiping restore option in Windows8.

If it is failing because of your AV then uninstall it not just turn it off, most of the 3rd party AV still have some processes running even when turned off.

You don't need it anyway as Windows Defender is perfectly competent and won't eat resources like a 3rd party AV.

Once you have a stable system, If you have a backup drive or network location to backup to use the deprecated Windows7 file recovery (windows Backup) to save a system image, this will allow a complete recovery of your stable system in the event of a disaster. You don't need a 3rd party program for that either:)

Thanks steveb - I have not tried to uninstall my av progs and I did wonder if they left something behind as you mentioned. Incidentally, you are right I am talking about 'restore' and not the system wiping restore point - which having checked that out is called 'system refresh' which is what I had to do recently and then had to put in all my progs again.
thanks again - I will try that out ( am away for a couple of weeks but I will come back on this)

Update to my problem - now solved!!:D
(I did not have to go away as I mentioned in my past post) but I have now solved the problem - you were right steveb - even though I closed down my Bitdefender AV it must have left something running because I have just uninstalled it (and incidentally Defender started up right away) and did a test restore and it worked perfectly. I'm a happy bunny.
Thanks guys
