Performance really odd

Short version:

My old laptop (3 years old, full of junk, slow) runs a minecraft game on about 25 fps. With the exact same video settings and environment, my brand new top-of-the-range quad core Samsung laptop runs it with about 11/12 fps...
I've spoken to a few friends and they can't understand why it is so underperforming when the guys in PCWorld said it'd be great for gaming

Long version:

I used to have (and still have sitting on my desk) a HP G62 laptop running Windows 7 64bit

I bought a brand new Samsung Series 3 laptop, running Windows 8 64bit 3 days ago

The HP has a Dual-Core AMD Athlon II P320
The Samsung has a Quad-Core AMD A8 4500M

The HP is full of crap and has always run slowly, the samsung is brand new and has 4 core processor, so anyone would say that it would most certainly run faster

While general performance is a bit faster, it's not great, and simple Minecraft is where it can be measured
The HP gets 25 ish fps
The Samsung gets about 11 fps

I don't understand why it would be doing this, as the settings on both are exactly the same.
Also general performance on the Samsung isn't the greatest, or what i would have expected from a quadcore laptop that's meant to be good at performance :(

Any suggestions or ideas?

Thanks, James

Is it possible you have dual graphics? I mean an Intel HD card and a Nvidia/AMD card...
otherwise try to check performance when on power.
