Unexplained disappearing buttons/icons

It seems with the Microsoft apps (mail, people, chat etc) that if you right click and choose other options or change settings in the settings bar the buttons/icons disappear. Is this a software glitch or something else. See below. (sorry if this has been solved, I couldn't find this problem anywhere) I should also point out that this is sporadic and doesn't happen every single time.

If you notice with the above photo (store), this happened when I wanted to sort the results of my search. Not only did the buttons/icons disappear but also the rating information.

Same prob - No Mail / Calendar / People / Messaging Icon

I have same problem. New user of Win 8. After doing the usual updates when first running the system the icons for Mail / Calendar / People / Messaging disappeared. The charms search does not show anything, checking the apps list shows nothing.

In the Apps store it says i have the App already installed. I did turn off the live tiles but didnt uninstall.

Any clue where its gone ? Thanks

Hello, Marky. Welcome to EightForums.

This seems to be happening to a lot of members after updates are installed, especially affecting the Modern side of 8. Did you perform the upgrade or fresh install? If upgrade, was it via Upgrade Assistant?

Did you perform the http://www.eightforums.com/showthread.php?t=3047? You may have to run it 2 or 3 times.

All in all, it seems those that perform fresh installs are having better luck, although it's a PITA to reinstall programs. A refresh found here http://www.eightforums.com/showthread.php?t=2293 may be an option, although, again, a PITA. I myself would perform a fresh install, then one knows where one stands. www.eightforums.com/showthread.php?t=13375

Another important thing is to turn on restore points, for it is not on by default, especially for after installing updates. www.eightforums.com/showthread.php?t=4688

I think to install the 8 OS purely and get it stabilized before loading other software is the way I think best to go. Too many of us in a hurry, especially with a new OS.

Hope this helps. Good luck to you. Please don't hesitate to ask more questions for sure. :)

I'm sorry but this does not correct the problem.

My apology for me or anyone not answering to you. It seems I missed this through the busy holidays. I hope all is well.

Hi there Hippsie. Thanks yr help. its a new PC with pre installed 8. I tried the sfc /scannow from the administrator command prompt (not the boot prompt) and it said nothing wrong. I rolled back a couple of restore points again to no avail.

Then by accident was on the store tile of the metro screen, right click brought up a sub menu at the top with 'Home' and 'Your Apps'. A click on your Apps gave another sub menu which I chose apps installed on the pc. There presto was the Mail / People / etc app saying as not installed. a quick install and all okay again.

So to summarise: Problem - Mail / Calendar / Messenger / People App not listed anywhere on Metro screen or under 'All Apps' or coming up under search in the charms bar. in the store it was showing as installed. Solution - Click on store from metro screen, right click (or equiv for touch screen), click on 'My Apps' in the new menu at the top of screen, from the left drop down chose 'Apps installed on PC' and then select Mail / People / Calendar and Messenging' and at the bottom comes an option to install.

Thanks again Hippsie for your kind and prompt help

You're welcome, but it doesn't seem I was of much help. Glad to see you figured it out. Thanks for posting the solution. :) I learned something. A lot more right clicking in the Modern side goes a long way. :)

Some update must be causing a glitch in the system causing this I guess?

Not Resolved

This issue has not been resolved for me. Between the time I posted this problem, I've restored the computer and still have the same issues. It's annoying actually. Someone said to replace the font that windows 8 requires, done and still nothing.
