SSD, sluggish performance on Chrome and other applications

Hello community,

I've been experiencing some weird issues with my newly installed OCZ Vertex 4. Specifically, I've been having poor performance on a whole compared to the previous month when I had bought it. Photoshop loads fairly quick (7-9 seconds?) from the shortcut but I remember it taking just under 3. VLC Media Player can take upwards of 10 seconds as well to open.

As for Chrome, I have an issue where browsing in the same tab.. browsing is fairly speedy. (Near instant) but opening a new tab, or clicking a link which in turn opens a new tab takes forever to load and then load a new page. Once the tab is loaded, speeding then begins to be fairly speedy again. (Using the address-bar directly even in the same tab causes slow downs as well.) I figure this is something to do Windows 8 or my SSD. Even opening the downloads or history page is slow! Or settings. Chrome variants such as Comodo and SRWare Iron share this problem. Internet Explorer and Firefox do not suffer from this problem. (Although, Firefox seems to lock up QUITE often... 5 times in 30 minutes on first install)

I've attached some benchmarks, files, and specs. All help is appreciated very much!

Have you got the latest Firmware update v1.5 for Vertex 4 installed? What security program you have installed? If you have any third party security program installed, disable it and see whether it helps.

Yes, 1.5 is installed. Performance on Chrome is excellent upon reboot but within 20 minutes of using the OS it begins to degrade. I also notice Photoshop and the like taking a lot longer to load.

I see 63°C CPU temp.

Is that idle? Then it's a bit high if you ask me.
Check to see if that goes even higher when the slowdown happens.

No, that is under load (a game was running) The tempature with a few applications open, Skype and Chrome sits at about 40 degrees Celsius. I'm currently experiencing the slowdown even at 40. (Average for this boot is 39)

I have done so and freed up to 70% of my drive.. but as you can see in my orginal post even when I had about 50% free my numbers were still around 400 MB/s. This shouldn't account for 15 seconds to load a page in chrome or for some apps to lag to load. :(

It's something with the browser then...

Have you got many addons/extensions running in Chrome?

The OP stated clearly that neither Internet Explorer nor Firefox suffered from the same problems as Chrome. Doesn't this indicate that the problem is most likely with Chrome?

Yes that's my point: has to be something with the browser, which is Chrome.
It's a possibility.

There are many variations on the default settings that work for different users.

If I was me, I'll look at how many extensions run, how many programs managed to install/add extra extensions.
Then disabling unused plugins and extensions.

Chrome has a great way of showing resources usage through its own task manager and details ("view background pages and gives the number of them).

Disabling or enabling "Continue running background apps when Chromium is closed" located at settings, may influence the startup speed as well.

I've done that on my Chrome previously as well - and I noted in the orginal post that I had tried variants of other Chrome browsers when the issue cropped up (Canary, Comodo, Iron, Rockmelt) all of which suffered the same issue. I think it has something to do with the multi-process nature of the browser and that is somehow linked to the slowdown in the loading of my applications.

Sorry I've skipped those. I'll mention that I never encountered it before, because maybe I don't have SSD also.
BUT the startup is not as fast as IE and FFox and that is something to notice in my case as well.

Have you tried Chromium ? Then you've got all the Chromes tested.
You unzip this one wherever you like and run it. It's safe because I use it daily and works pretty well.
Compare it with Iron, but this one is the base project for all Chromes.

Then if nothing else works then unfortunately you'll have to use another browser.
The hope still remains that it will get fixed in the near future, whatever the problem is.

I'll post any tips that I'll encounter regarding the matter.
In the meantime, best of luck.

Get the latest daily build from Chromium here:
http://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/chromium-browser-snapshots/index.html?path=Win/
Site needs some time till it loads. then go under to the biggest number folder an get the *win32.zip

Chrome is slow on startup.

Chrome slow loading from start : Google Chrome Hints & Tips
Browser Slow? How to Make Google Chrome Fast Again - How-To Geek

The first one has many different things like Babylon interfering and antivirus programs (intensive/proactive scans maybe...) plus some who uninstalled it...
Hope you'll find something useful especially if you're a Chrome fan.

But it's weird that it gets slower and slower, if that's noticed, probably they keep adding too much stuff to it.
Well, who knows for sure, FFox also gets slower, don't know what to think.

Testing if a 64bit browser is better in speed, as most claim:
If you are on x64 you can try PaleMoon or WaterFox.
Then you have IE 10 x64, to begin with, as well.
-Chrome builds are not available in this list...

Changing the architecture to 64bit for browsers doesn't bring big changes but the crashes and hangs can be different and speed isn't a problem (speed is slightly better). Keep in mind that LESS plugins are available for x64 but 64 FFox'es mentioned above can use pretty much all plugins from Mozilla's site.

Thanks for your suggestions. I'll monitor my PC carefully and see if I can resolve this. For now, I have downloaded a copy of PaleMoon and am enjoying it. Thanks! I don't have any AV software that is interfere, especially not over time.

It's just my Chrome becomes unbearably slow occasionally; and apps get sluggish. For now, I'll monitor and learn to work around it with PaleMoon if I can't reboot. +1 Rep for you and if you're interested, I'll take a video when I see it again!

I find Pale Moon a good choice myself, work very well and was built with Visual Studio 2012, that's why we can consider it 100% compatible. Plus we will see x64 in action for browsers ourselves.

Thanks for the +1 Rep.
