    I did this:
    autocheck autochk /k:C *

And it worked for a couple of weeks but then, incredibly, today it did it again and again I needed to remove the battery to get it started again

I am desperate ... any other ideas ???

I am tagging onto this thread for several reasons: I have applied your fix, running Win 8.1 and my systems keeps returning to the autochk/k/c/k/??C:* automatically after I have changed it to match your fix. Any workarounds? The scan and repair completes so there is no disc issues that I am aware of however it takes a long time to boot up.

I have found the problem !

I have figured out what the problem was. I was using glary utilities (which works great with win 7 but not with win 8). In-fact every time I had that problem glary utilities was used before.

Uninstalling the utilities solved the problem

Thanks for thread. This solution worked for me.

    Thanks to Poweruser, "Mr Showdown":

"Go to regedit, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager,
Change the BootExecute string to autocheck autochk /k:C *"
