Disk Defragmenter Doesn't Do Anything

When I click Optimize on a drive, it analyzes for a few seconds and then says "Needs optimization (17% fragmented)". It doesn't actually defragment though. This is on a regular hard drive, not SSD. What's wrong?

By the way, I have Scheduled optimization turned off.

Hello Akumajou, and welcome to Eight Forums.

That's normal when you click on "Optimize" from the drive's properties page. After analyzing is finished, you would just need to select the drive, and click on Optimize again for it to actually start defragging it.

Hope this helps, :)

Still doesn't work, no matter how many times I click Optimize. Current status says % analyzed for a few seconds, then Pass 1: 0% defragmented, and ends on Needs optimization (17% fragmented).

Surprised I didn't notice this before: Event Viewer is generating an error saying "The volume (C:) was not optimized because an error was encountered: Boot optimization could not complete due to a lack of free space. (0x89000019)" every time. I'm using a single HDD, with two partitions, C: has 237 GB free of 332 and D: has 114 GB free of 263... Is that really a lack of free space?

Yeah, I find it to be a bit quarky. You might give the free Auslogics Disk Defrag a try to see how you like it instead.

I use Auslogics too, under the settings tab click program settings and go to algorithms. I check the third box down the list that says, Move system files to beginning of disk, this will speed up performance. I usually push defrag and optimize everytime, this program has really helped speed up my system, I also use ccleaner to clear junk files.

One thing about Auslogics is that it gives you an option to wipe free space, which in my opinion helps keep your hard drive healthy. If you read up on hard drives they say when you delete a file it really doesn't get deleted and can remain on your disk, thats how the police and fbi retrieve data, so its best to wipe the free space at at least once in a great while to ensure good disk health.
