Extremely slow startup

I installed Windows 8 RTM as an upgrade to Win 7 64 ultimate.
All went smoothly other than getting a couple of existing programs to play nice.
Now, windows loads up to the start very quickly and then slows to a dead crawl while it loads a couple of apps I put in startup - I mean about two minutes before I can use anything. This is beyond frustrating.

Secondly, and trivial by comparison. Windows will not let me change my password. It says something went wrong and to try again which, of course, never works.

It seems that every time I decide to give this @#% os another try I find even more reasons to hate it.

Can someone please offer some help before I take this DVD and sail it into the lake.

Thanks,
Gene

Instead of finding reasons to hate, find reasons to like. :D

Have you tried defragmenting the hard drive?
