Refresh option and loss of programs and disk space

Hi,
I used the refresh option because the Win8 apps weren't working. They're working fine after using the refresh option.

In the process I lost all the manually installed programs (I knew that would happen, although it wasn't stated very clear).

My question: Although the manually installed programs are gone (a lot!) the remaining disk space is still the same. Does anyone know what's going on here. Are the removed programs not removed or have they been backed-up?

Thank you Brummyfan. Is there a way to easily restore the removed programs or do they need to be reinstalled?

They have to be reinstalled.
