I just upgraded to windows 8 pro earlier today from 7 and it was working fine. Then I checked for updates and said there were 5 important updates, so I installed them. I did a restart and it was taking a very long time configuring windows, finally it got to where I put in my password and now it's been at the part where it shows my name and email address and says welcome with the dots spinning for a very long time. Is this normal? I've never had it take this long with past windows OS's.

How long is a "very long time"?

This very well may be normal for Windows 8 because as I recall...one of the updates was 169MB.

    Graphics Card(s)
2x MSI Twin Frozr III R6950
So after waiting for 45 minutes, it got past the welcome screen and is now at a black screen?

If you have the time, I would leave the system on overnight. If it is not remedied in the morning, boot into Recovery Console and use System Restore to undo the changes of the updates.

Well it seems to working now. After it sat awhile I forced a power off, then when I started it up again it said failed to reconfigure windows or something like then it restarted itself and it seems to work fine now.

Have a glance through your update history. I think you will find that it tried to update your graphics card and has now back dated it again. (HP?)

Use several different computers during a day, so specs are irrelevant.
Drivers for ATI/AMD Radeon HD 4xxx & below are supposed to be in the install disk, as AMD isn't going to provide support for Windows 8 with those cards. Except for quarterly bug fixes, if needed.

Only those that are 5xxx & up will still get AMD support.
