Had no problem before, network set to HOME and could find other network computers and they could find me. Today however, the setting has been changed somehow to PRIVATE and I can't change it back.

Any suggestions on how to do this in Windows 8?

Please note - my other computer is a Windows 7 machine, and that one can easily be configured to change the network type.

I had this problem a while back, but was stuck in Public
But I went into Network and Sharing and Advanced Sharing settings

I played around with the settings there till I got them proper and has been working ever since.

However, in a home network, they should all be set to private, not public/guest.

You may need to enable Turn on file and printer sharing and Network discovery
then configure your home group as needed

Also note: you can no longer connect to the default hidden shares in Win8 like C$ etc.

There is no such thing as a Home network setting in Windows 8. It's Private, Guest or Public no Home setting with Windows 8.

Private is the new Home setting and Private Network is what you use for setting up a Homegroup. :)

Well I managed to solve this by re-installing Windows 8. It appears that something had broken, because Private Networking would revert back to it's settings every time I saved. Now, I can select the options in Private Networking to allow other computers to see my files etc. Perhaps a bug?

Anyway, thank you to all those that helped :)
