Trying to figure out how I can correctly connect all 4 computers to the homegroup/network. (all running 8.1)
Right now, I see all computers on the network but once I set a file to share, and I try to access it from another computer, it says "windows cannot access DESKTOP COMPUTER"

I basically want to create a server with all of the files on one computer, and all other computers can access the files i designate to share.

Can someone help me out? I been spending days trying to figure this out but it never works properly. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. My router is a Lynksys e2500.

If the folder or file is not in a Library, which is nothing more than a shortcut to a folder, it will cause issues.

If you want to be able to have full access to all folders on each machine. You have to Leave the Homegroup, Trn the feature off and just use standard Network Workgroup sharing.

If you want to have all shared files on one machine, buy a NAS. I use a Lenovo ix2-4 for network sharing. On the go, I use a Owncloud space that is ran on rack space my family owns.

Thanks broe for the tip. Figured out the problem though, it was avast firewall. I disabled it and now the network is working properly.
Are you familiar with Avast?

I did purchase a nas, the WD My Cloud EX2 and must I say it was complete crap.
-Renaming files I didnt authorize it to just so it can index the file. (no there isnt an option to turn it off)
-cant delete/rename/create folders with ease
-moving videos to the nas takes a numerous amount of time because it can only handle 2mb/ps

I figured my desktop machine works better then a nas when it's actually letting me access the network. Now I found the kink, it works much better.

Yes on Avast. No do not use. I have my NAS set for Raid-1, so I have 1TB, not 2.

My brother handles our Owncloud server. We each get 1TB of storage space.

It is nice, because we can access the share on the go with our phones or tablets, laptops.

The only thing I keep on the home NAS, is backup images.

Yeah the WD is crap. I got my Lenovo off of Newegg.com. I got one of the lower end ones at first. It went bad during an update on the sane day I sent it back and got the other.
