Do you need a Coaxial cable for internet?

I have no idea why my brain is acting like this lol, but I am thinking of moving my workspace to the other side of the room. However, there is no cable jack on that side and I do not want to have to drag a cable across the floor.

My cable is plugged into my modem, and my router is plugged into my modem. Is it possible to simply connect wirelessly, without having to connect the coax to the modem? Or is that absolutely necessary? I assume that is how I receive internet, right? Through the coaxial cable? I have other computers that can just connect wirelessly, but this is my "hard wired" main PC, that has the router attached. It is wireless capable, but I prefer to also have a hard wired connection. The router is connected by a yellow cable to the modem, which also has the coaxial cable attached. Then I have my Ethernet connected from pc to router.

Just go with either Ethernet over Power or go Wifi. You only need the Coax jack, if you plan on moving the gateway.

The gateway, being the modem, correct? Yes, I was needing to move the whole setup, including the modem, as I do not want cords across the floor.

Again you do not need to move anything. If you cannot run Ethernet. Use a Ethernet over Power adapter. Otherwise use Wifi as I stated in post #2.

In that case buy a longer Ethernet cable and just place it alongside walls.

I still need to know, does the coaxial cable need to be connected to the modem in order for the pc to have internet. Be it wireless, or hard-wired?

I would think so, as isn't this what is bringing in the service from outside from the service provider, has to be connected to the modem/router.

If the modem is what is going out to get the service from your ISP then the computer needs to be connected to it. Unless the modem is actually a gateway with built in Wifi.

Would help to know what ISP and what gateway/modem you have.

Some is greek to me, mine is a wireless broadband router, 4 ethernet ports and wireless. Coax cable comes straight to the router from ISP service.

jds63 you most likely have a eMTA which allows digital phone service. We call them "Gateways", which is a generic term for them. Yes in reality the unit contains multiple interfaces, but using Gateway instead of Router is better. You find some of the old timers that will call a Router as a "Firewall".

Thanks for info, i have Verizon FIOS i do have digital phone service and TV with them, all i know this one uses a coax to feed signal to it.

This info may or may not be helpful.

I get internet from Comcast via coaxial TV cable.
Coaxial cable is hooked up to the cable modem.
An ethernet cable leads from the modem to the back of the computer.

The old tv cable is tacked to the base of the baseboards along the wall.
At the front door they unscrewed the metal door-base & passed the cable under it & replaced it & continued on along the wall with it.

Of course, wireless is an option.

Fios is a unique critter. Coax for tv, Cat-5e for Ethernet. All fed from the outside Fiber Terminal.

David I always vote for Wireless. With N & AC, you have the ability of having just as good speeds or better, than being hard connected with just a 10/100 Ethernet port.

The only things in my house that are hardwired is the two Access Points, anything that does Streaming Media, and two Security Cameras. That does not include what I have downstairs with all of the networking gear. All other stuff is Wireless-n only. Some older legacy gear that requires Wireless-b/g is on its own Access Point.

You clearly stated that you want to move all equipments to another room.

1. You must connect the coaxial cable to the modem to connect to your ISP using the MAC ID (media access control address) on the bottom the modem which your ISP can identify who you are and allow you to connect to the outside world with the speed you've subscribed for.
2. The simple way to establish this is to re-run the coaxial cable to the other room.
   - If the rooms share the same wall then it would be easy to drill a hole and either use a cable splitter to run an extra cable connection or use the same cable.
   - If they don't share the wall then you can run thru the attic or from outside. You might have to get an electrician to do it if you are not a handy man.

The alternative suggested above does not answer your question. In addtition:

1. Ethernet over Power line which uses your existing electrical wire in your home to transfer signal. However, it will only work correctly if the elctrical wire is on the same circuit (Same breaker) and your equipments are still reside in the old room.
2. Wireless vs Hard wired: There's no way that wireless will be better than hard wired. There are some variables to get a decent speed with wireless:
   - You must have an N-adapter and and N-Router to get the speed UP TO between 600-900 mpbs. And also depend on the distance between router and your PC and not counting most devices in your home are using 2.4GHZ and sometimes interfere with each others resulting in drop of signal.
   - The suggestion above assume you have 10/100 mbps network adapter. What if you have 10/100/1000 mbps ? To run at 1000 mbps, you'd also need a 1Gbps router.

Yes it is, fiber to house. They have faster speeds then this...

topgundcp the information you posted about the Ethernet over Power adapters is incorrect. The new ones do not require being on the same leg or same branch circuit. The longer the distance you are from the other, your speeds will vary.

As for Wifi, Wireless-n for the majority will only be two channels, unless you opt for one. Majority of the people with Internet Service do not even go with 50mbps or higher, unless they are gamers, or have a lot of people in the house that love to stream.

His ISP already has the information on the modem, so why would he need to give it them again.

I have had no issues with using Wireless-n in my house. The speeds are the same when we are 75' away from the house. It all depends on the equipment you are using, in how good of quality the connection you get.
