RDC on Windows 8.1

I run a network for a local business and they are internally running Windows 2003 Server R2 and Windows XP for desktops.

A few of the employees remote into their workstations from home and after upgrading to Windows 8, it stopped working for them. They can usually get to the login prompt and type in their password on their company workstation, but after that, the screen freezes and never goes beyond that point.

Since they are connecting and logging in, I know it's not a firewall issue as it works fine for me from Windows 7, My Mac, my iPhone and iPad using Jump App, etc. It's just the RDC Client on Windows 8.x having problems. I've tried lowering settings, etc on their Windows 8 RDC settings, but nothing helps.

Thanks.

In this kind of situation, you really need to set up a VPN server, or go with a Citrix setup, if there are specific apps that cannot be used from the remote location.

RDC is limited in the number of connections. Server 2003 does not work properly with 8. It may work fine with 7. You can go to slipstick.com on your questions regarding this task. You need to be working with a consultant that can straighten this all out. What you are going into, and how, is the wrong way.

The worse thing a owner can do, is believe that hardware does not have to be the best when it comes to Routers, Managed Switches, Servers, Desktops.

I know the "right" way, just going with what I'm told and given and trying to "make it work". Upgrades to everything is coming, but they like to do it "all at once" instead of spirally upgrading each area. I had suspicion that the separation in versions from XP to 8.x was probably the culprit as well as older hardware on both the PC and network side of things.

I can do the VPN thing, we do have a guy who VPNs in from a remote office (not using RDC, but just to have access to internal shares, etc.). I'll try VPN with the local "remote" RDC users and see if works better through that.

Thanks for your reply.
