am setting up an office and the cabinet that has the routers/switches/modems is in another room.
i made a cat 5e cable and tested if it works by plugging in the cable in a port on my switch and to another computer,
The green led lighted on this computer indicating that there is internet connection,,
After the brought the cable in my office and plugged it in the rj45 socket on the motherboard , no indication i.e. green led. and there is no internet connection on my computer,
do i need to do other configurations in my computer for the internet to work .?

What part of Wyoming are you in?

There's two types of Ethernet cables for connecting Computers to various things, one is the straight-through and the other is the cross-over. Most times the cross-over is for Computer to Computer and the most-common straight-through is Computer to Router or Switch. Here you will find images of both:

I also use a simple testing tool, proves the cable is wired correctly and there is continuity but doesn't give the quality of the signal through the cable. If you have an electrical or electronic shop close by you could take the cables in for testing. Also check Device Manager on any computer to verify drivers have been installed for the Ethernet/NIC [Network Interface Card/Adapter].
