Hi folks
I am using Windows 8 consumer Preview I Upgraded form Win 7 , I am now having a problem with my wireless network connections, (once connected to the router it stays connected,) but on booting it show that I only have limited connection and would not connect to the internet.
I then have to run a diagnostic and allow windows to fix the problem every time I boot the PC (an Acer Aspire 6920g). I have deleted the Lan drivers and wireless drivers and reinstalled them about 4 times now, I have also not installed the drivers to allow windows to install it's own driver, the result is the same. I have even purchased an external TP-link high gain USB wireless device, results are the same, Limited connection, run diagnostic to fix etc. and that sorts the problem every time.
Has anyone got any ideas or have encounter this before

PS I am sitting about 3 metres from the router with full signal strength

Hi, welcome.

1) Update the router's firmware to latest, then after, reset it to factory defaults. Then, change the channel to a different one than it is currently set at.

2) Install the lan and wireless drivers from here: ATHEROS drivers for Microsoft Windows (Atheros?????)

If the wireless is Intel, install the latest driver from their site instead.

3) Uninstall any 3rd party security suite or firewall, if installed. Best to do in safe mode with the special tool for the specific product.

4) If not using Homegroup to share, disable IPv6 for the wireless adapter and also disable the IP Helper service.

Thanks GMan, I am certain that it is not the router's firmware, because I have tried connecting at several locations with different routers, even in Spain last week all the same result, even with a new external wireless adapter same result, I have reinstalled the Aheros drivers, disabled windows defender for a while, and AVG.
I think the problems is with Win. 8

Never said anything at all about disabling anything. Newest router firmware needed. You're welcome.

The problem is not Windows 8 but perhaps failure to follow advice, while creating other issues in addition to current one.

No offence GMan disabling windows defender was me trying everything, newest router firmware could not be required for all 6 routers I tried in 3 different countries, and to date in the UK I am using Virgin Media newest kit no firmware available.
That off my chest, I'll tell you where the problem lay, AVG internet security full version, I first uninstalled AVG and everything was fine, then I reinstalled it and altered some security settings, where several items were unassigned and changed to allow, and bingo.

Anyway thanks for your help, problem solved

You're welcome.

I give certain advice for certain reasons and it is usually best to follow precisely, regardless of what the issue actually is or not.

lol damn stinkin 3rd party security causes more problems than malware any day. Not to say malware's problems aren't worse because they are...I'm talking rates here.

I have Windows 8 Pro and my wireless download speed is limited to max. 2Mbyte/sec. Until yesterday, when I still had Windows 7 installed, my download speed was 7Mbyte/sec. My wireless lan adapter is the Sitecom Wireless Network USB Micro Adapter 300N X3 WLA-3000. Funny enough, inside Citrix Xenapp environment, I get a full download speed of 7Mbyte/sec, although the connection fails about every minute. So I'd say there is a setting within Windows 8 that limits the download speed? When testing the speed I didn't use any 3rd party antivirus of firewall programmes. Any ideas?!

I've been using freeavg for years with no problems on my w7 pro laptop. Then all the sudden, I would get disconnected from the internet and rebooting was the only thing that fixed the problem... until it happened again which was at least a couple times a day. Renewing, flushing the dns and so on didn't work. Even removing and reinstalling the network drivers didn't help. Turns out, it's AVG that's the problem for me. Everytime I disabled it, my internet was back up and running. The AVG products that I tested with this problem is the AVG Internet protection 2013, Free AVG, and AVG Business edition. All these versions gave me the exact same problem. It's actually the firewall settings that AVG creates that messes up the internet connection. Did you try uninstalling your AVG product hgrock? And by the way, thanks for banning Gman. Those guys give IT people a bad rap.

I also had wireless connectivity issues with my wife's new windows 8 notebook and I solved them by uninstalling the Intel PROSet/Wireless Software (Option: "Uninstall a Program")

Hi there
Often these problems are caused by the following

1) Contention -- if you have load of neighbours also with wireless connections -- change the router to use another channel or better switch to wireless-N if your computers can handle it.

2) signal strength poor --- get a Wi-Fi extender (around 40 - 60 EUR).

3) some device (mobile phone / tablet / media server etc) is using the IP address that your computer normally uses.
Swiitch off ALL devices including Computers, Mobile phones / tablets and re-boot the router. I know these days that finding the OFF button on a mobile phone is likely to be a near impossible task for a lot of people but believe me they DO actually have these.

This will usually fix limited connectivity problems.
In general its always better to let Windows set up connections than use 3rd party applications.

Cheers
