I am wired to a local network and use a wireless card to connect to the internet. Internet is working find.

network and homegroup both recognize the remote computer and display shared resources, but won't allow me to access the resource or map a drive letter.

What am I missing?

Hi,

Free wireless! :) Heh.

I would go into the wireless lan's nic properties and disable Client for MS Networks, File and Print Sharing, IPv6, and both Link Layer entries. Save, reboot for good measure.

Would also change the NetBios setting to disabled, for wireless nic.

Other than that, is there any error message shown when attempting to map?

Free? Far from it. I may not have clearly described my setup. My internet comes through a usb wireless card through Ntelos.

When I open Windows explorer and open the network entry it shows both my computer and the other machine on the LAN. If I open the remote computer, it shows me the shared resources. Unfortunately, if I try to open any of these resources, or map a drive, I get a message saying I do not have permission to access the resource and points me to my network admin. When I look in the mirror and ask the admin, I get no answers.

On the remote machine, set the folders you are trying to share to have permission for "Everyone" without quotes.

If you have the same user account name as the remote machine, make sure passwords are the same too.

If there is no password set for the remote machine, set one and save.

I'll check that. No problem from win 7 before I installed 8.

How are you logging in to Windows 8, with a 'local' or Microsoft account?

Local. From all I can see the remote machine is properly configured.

If win 8 requires me to log on with a MS account, that is going to be a deal killer.

Using a Microsoft account is not mandatory and not doing so will only affect you ability to use Metro applications. The problem you're seeing now seems to be quite common for this version of Windows 8, so it may be a bug or a feature. However, you should be able to work around it.

The first thing to try is adding a Windows Credential to your Windows 8 PC. To do this:

1. On the Windows 8 PC, Open Control Panel
2. Select User Accounts
3. Select manage your Credentials (on the left)
4. Select Windows Credentials
5. Select Add a Windows Credential and complete the fields
6. Try and connect.

If that doesn't work, I'd make sure, being as you're using a Homegroup, that the appropriate group permissions have been applied to the share. see the image for details.

This problem is usually caused by not having the time/date settings correct and in sync with the other machine. Homegroups will not function if IPv6 is disabled. I would not recommend shutting of any services related to networking.

Read permissions are set automatically when you set up a Homegroup however write permissions are not, so you should only need to add write permissions if you need them. No further adjustments to sharing permissions should be required.

This Homegroup check list may help you spot other potential problems.

In case it was confusing at all, I didn't say to disable any services. What I did say is to disable some bindings to the wireless adapter that is only used for the internet and not local.

This is to avoid a conflict with Windows believing that it should or might use that adapter instead of the wired.

Just setup a w8 machine and with all the updates going on, left the password off. Then spent an hour debugging file sharing. Worked for w8 to read a w7 share, didn't work for w7 to read w8 share. Keep lowering security, tweaking norton firewall but got no place. The read this thread and bingo. Needed to put a password on w8 machine so user accounts were identical. These lines from an earlier post on this thread turned on the lights for me.

Got some of the same problem with win 8 and 7 on the same home network.

The win 7 machines have same username and password, and can see each other and share the folders set up.

The win 8 machine use other username\ms sccount and i have set u shared folder than i can access from other win 7 machines. The problem is accessing win 7 shared folders. I can see the machines on the network but not connect to them. That is sometimes i get the popup to enter user and password, did that and checked "remember", and it worked.

Next time the same machine is unavailable, i can retry 10 times then get the popup again to enter username+password.

Must say i hate setting up a new os to the point where i can make an image and just use that in the future.
