Homegroup causing choppy playback when streaming to smart

Hi,
I have this strange problem. If I join a homegroup on my windows 8.1 PC (with my wife and daughter's W7 laptops), whenever I send a video file to play on my LG smart TV (via Plex or DLNA), the playback is choppy with frequent jumps in the image. When I leave the homegroup streaming is perfect. I have replicated the problem a number of times to confirm this e.g. start a playback while in the homegroup = choppy playback, leaving the homegroup = immediate perfect playback.

Any ideas what is causing this problem and suggestions for ways around this?

Thanks.

It depends on if you are using Wifi or a wired connection. Most people doing streaming are using a dedicated NAS with a wired Ethernet connection, along with a Wireless-n or Wireless-ac router.
