Solved Windows 8.1 can't connect to wireless network after update

A couple of days ago, my network manager started misbehaving after a system update. The computer has trouble connecting to every network it can find and when it finally connects, the connection becomes limited after 10 minutes. It happens to all networks I try to connect to and other devices in my home doesn't have trouble with my specific network.

I suspect that it's Windows that's the problem. The userface for connecting to networks (the manager, bar, whatever you call it) freezes constantly, it doesn't always react whenever I click buttons and it doesn't remember settings, like which networks I automatically connect to. Edit: It also has a habit of going "No networks found" despite the fact it could find networks seconds ago. Whenever I try to turn it off and then on for it to find networks, it doesn't work. It simple refuses to turn the wi-fi off and I have no idea how else to do that.

I've already tried the following:
  • Updating my network card's driver (did that some days before the update, then reinstalled when this problem happened, no difference)
  • Disabling and enabling the network card (works sometimes but the connection still dies after 10 minutes)
  • Troubleshooting (no use, it freezes when it tries to resolve the problem)

I use Windows 8.1, and I can access the internet with cable.

Spyware, malware, and viruses are known to hijack network connections in order to redirect your searches to their preferences and also to keep you from getting to an antivirus web site.

Update and run your antivirus

Download and install SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY, its free and a fantastic spyware, trojan, etc.. cleaner.

MALWAREBYTES ANTIMALWARE FREE is another fantastic cleaner, and it will pickup any gaps SPYBOT may have missed

Once these are all clean we can see if its a hardware issue or driver issue..

Thanks for the answer. I tried both programs but it hasn't helped. I just restarted the computer after doing scans and destroying whatever the programs could find but the problem is still there.

The network sidebar is even more buggy now. I don't dare to click the button where you can turn wireless on and off because it can only be clicked once, it doesn't react when I choose to disconnect from a network and everything is slow and freezing all the time.

Update:

The troubleshooter finally gave me something, telling me that "The default gateway is not avaible". I googled the problem and unchecked the "Allow computer to turn off the device to save power" box in the network card's properties but that didn't work either. Still trying to figure it out.

If it is a laptop, does this happen only on battery power? If so, then change the power profile to High Performance. Also does this happen when connected with an ethernet cable?

It's a laptop but there's no pattern in the disconnection. It happens regardless of battery power or charger.

No, that's the thing, it only happens when on wireless. The ethernet cable has no problems whatsoever.

Alright, I'll try it if the problem persists.

The problem has been gone since I got a couple of Windows 8.1 Updates so I assume that fixed it.
