Can't RDP to Windows 8 desktop

I am trying to remote desktop to my Windows 8 PC from a Windows 7 PC, but it's not working.

When I start the RDP client and click Connect, I am prompted for my credentials. The connection is then established, and I see the Windows 8 login screen with my username selected, and the little spinning dots are going. Then it either freezes or just drops the connection completely.

I have tried flipping on and off various options in the RDP client on the Windows 7 PC with no success. I followed one post's suggestion of turn off the "Printers" option on the Local Resources tab--no luck. I have enabled the "allow remote connections" option on the Windows 8 PC with the more permissive setting.

Can anyone suggest a fix for this problem?

    Thanks.

Are you running any third-party security applications on either the host or client?

    Hi there
Have you ENABLED remote access FOR THE W8 PC -- do this in the control panel.

Remember also if you are OUTSIDE your local LAN to open I think it's port 3389 and port forward via the router to the INTERNAL lan address of your W8 machine.

If you don't like the idea of opening port 3389 choose another one and "Tunnel" it using (FREE) putty.exe (Google for this as setting this up is beyond the scope of this post).

Outside your LAN also if you don't have a static IP address or domain name use one of the FREE services to provide a domain name so you can access your machine from OUTSIDE your router. Don't PAY for services like let me in etc.

    Cheers

    Thanks for the replies.

@Calico, it's a fresh install. No security stuff installed. The client machine works fine for connecting to other machines.

@jimbo45 I have dynamic DNS set up and a port forwarded, so I can connect to the machine just fine. Other services (subsonic, utorrent) work fine through the firewall. It seems that just as the RDP session would open to the desktop, it freezes or crashes. I have verified that the machine is still on, and has logged me out on the console (just like if the RDP session had connected).

Since my original post, I have verified that the same behavior happens if I connect from a Windows 7 machine or even another Windows 8 machine.

You might check the Windows Security event logs for confirmation of logon, through RDP, on the PC you're trying to connect to, it might give us a further clue...

@Calico I checked the security log and there's definitely logon activity there. I am not really familiar with that log so I can't decipher it further on my own.

This also fails when trying to remote from an ubuntu desktop.

This might be a dumb question, but has *anyone* successfully RDP'd to a Windows 8 CP machine?

I use Dameware NT Utilities so that's why I haven't said anything up until now.

Windows key + Pause/Break key | Advanced System Settings | Remote tab

You could check on it there. Also, must set Windows Firewall to accept and have user permissions allowed too (Select Users button).

OK I answered my last question myself -- I was able to connect to the *other* Windows 8 computer from the "problem" Windows 8 computer.

So at this point I have no idea why I can't connect to this Windows 8 machine.

Well I found out there were a bunch of Windows Updates available, so I installed them, rebooted, and was able to connect after that. :-D

Thanks for all the suggestions, y'all!

None of the Windows 8 updates have anything to do with RDP up to this point, but very glad it's working now for ya.
