I just purchased a refurbished Lenovo Y-40 today. It has a dual band wireless-AC 3160 and is sitting right next to my old asus u56e which has "Integrated 802.11 b/g/n or 802.11 b/g Built-in Bluetooth™ V3.0 (Optional) 10/100/1000 Base T".
I pay for 12 mbps internet speed with Time Warner and there are never more than 3 laptops connected to the internet at once.
My router is the motorola SBG6580 and is about 25 ft away in a different bedroom. All my drivers have been updated.
Why is the connection for my Lenovo so much worse?
While using the Asus, I encounter 5 second long lag spikes that reach up to 1000 ping when playing games. Sometimes it happens once every 10 minutes and sometimes it happens every 30 seconds. Is that my routers fault or my Asus? I have not bothered trying with the Lenovo yet because the connection already seems to be much worse browsing the internet and the connection bar in the system tray is always at 1 or 2 bars out of 5.
I bought the new Lenovo in hope that I would be able to avoid network connection problems because assumed it was ultimately faster than my Asus. I still believe it should be and am curious on how to speed things up.
So far, I have updated my drivers, went to device manager/network adapter/Realtek PCIe Family Controller Properties/advanced and changed the "Speed & Duplex" from Auto Negotiation to 100 Mbps Half Duplex. I am not sure if this has helped but I saw it in a similar post.
